Hi there,

I was on Bulldog's 8mb system but they seemed to be going down the pan so I got a "return to donor" to BT (Bulldog had the line). I then signed up to ADSL24 and my line was activated yesterday.

I'm currently synced at 7424 kbps but I'm only getting around 2000. When I was on Bulldog I was getting virtually full 8mb speeds. I'm 1.6km away from the exchange and my stats are
Down UP
Connection Speed 7424 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.0 db 21.0 db
Noise Margin 5.9 db 25.0 db

You'll probably have to give it the full 10 days to decide where it should settle as its a new activation.

Of course it may very well sort itself in the next day or so, but BT won't do anything about it for the first 10 days of connection.

If its still at 2000Kbps after that, then you may have a stuck profile ... which adsl24 can sort if that turns out to be the case.
This has happened to some new customers previously.

One thing I would note however is that your SNR margin is a bit on the low side at 5.9dB for an 38dB Attenuation line,
and anything at or under the 6dB mark can make those longer lines unstable.
(i.e dropping the line and re-syncing at a different rate, messing the IP profile up)

Is your SNR margin always at that rate, or does it fluctuate?

Although I'm a techy, my knowledge on ADSL is pretty slim so I don't know what my SNR, attenuation etc was before.

I remember years ago, there used to be a BT webpage that you could log into outside your ISP authentication and test against their speedtest. That would let you know whether the fault lay with your connection or your ISP. Does that still exist?

Ahh, a little bit of digging round shows that I'm on the IP Profile of 2000. Is it just a question of waiting a few days for it to raise?

Effectively, yes. All new BTW ADSL lines are initially set up with a 2000 profile, which is then adjusted by the Dynamic Line Management (DLM) system to the most stable rate your line is capable of.

This takes up to 10 days.
