New service from BT

What is the Broadband Accelerator service?

It's a new service where an engineer visits your home to try to improve your Internet connection speed. They'll do this by making adjustments to your home wiring and improving your computer's performance.

How much faster will my connection be?

The work we do on your home wiring should increase your connection speed by at least 1Mbps. How much your computer will speed up by varies depending on its age and capacity. The engineer will tell you what computer settings they've changed. You may not benefit from the changes made to your home wiring until three days after they were made. So we'll phone you a week after the visit to check that you're getting faster speeds and are happy with the results.

How does the "No fix no fee" Money Back Guarantee work?

If your Internet connection speed (independent of the broadband network speed) has not increased by at least 0.5Mbps, you are entitled to claim your money back.

How does the Broadband Accelerator service work?

Your broadband speed is affected by four things:
1. How well your computer works
2. The wiring in your home
3. Your local broadband network and distance from the exchange
4. How many people are using the Internet at the same time

The Broadband Accelerator service will work on the first two of these issues. Please note: although the internal wiring check will benefit all computers in your home, the engineer will only work on improving one computer's performance.

Perhaps this explains why i am seeing a 1mb reduction in my line throughput speed whilst still having full sync rate and good snr for an 8 mb line.

Nice little earner ....

My tinfoil hat is getting a bit tight perhaps santa will provide a new one.

sounds to me like all they will do is fit one of these

(or maybe theyl just remove the bellwire altogether)

That's an outrageous claim. It might or it might not make that improvement, depending on the state of the user's wiring, and interference conditions in and around the home. Removing or filtering the bell wire often helps, but not always. Any other tidying up of wiring will help only if the current wiring is deficient in some way. The best solution of all is to fit a filtered faceplate (which may involve other wiring changes because of the position of the master socket) but even this will only improve speed in some cases.

It sounds like snake oil to me. They'll be returning a lot of fees.. they don't even mention things like switching to a better pair so they're not making any real improvement.

#2: We'll re-punch down all your connections at/to the master socket and then tell you to remove any DIY extensions.

#1: We'll suggest you go buy some more RAM or a new computer from..oh. I dunno..Dabs.

#1a: You probably have a trojan or virus - our removal charge is 'X' - oh and why not go buy some antivirus software from...oh. I dunno..Dabs.

Considering that #3 is pretty critical (as Tony said, a better pair is likely to help), I guess it's skipped as it may involve a lot of line work/expense for BT.
