Hello again,

Ive literally just got my MAC code hot from BT and went to the migrate page, and was wondering... Do i want 1 static IP or a block of 8?

I was thinking...

1. I have a small network of 3 pcs, so surely need more than 1 IP.
2. Isnt it better (if you dont have a server) to have a dynamic IP, so - and i know im going to sound paranoid here - you're harder to track.
3. But, a static ip would help for setting up torrents / port forwards.

So, any advice?

Thanks

If you're using a router and NAT I think 1 IP would be the best, as your router will most likely issue your machines with 192.168.1.x addresses. I'm not sure how much benefit 8 ips would actually give you with the standard routers that you can buy off the shelf.

Can anyone expand on how to use the 8 ips and it's benefits?

regards

Cecil.

1 IP is fine for up to 250 PC's all behind the one router.

You will only need 8 IP's if you want each PC or device behind your router to have its own external IP address (like if you were running servers etc). This would also render the routers firewall useless as it will not be using NAT mode or SPI protection.

I would stick with 1 static IP for your case :) Let your router do the sharing and all will be fine. You can always upgrade to 8 IP's for free in the future...

Thanks will do. :D

Just out of curiosity (dont go thinking im some hacker / cracker! :p ), but, say, for arguments sake, you get banned from a site.

With a dynamic IP you can just reboot the router and be back to the site with a new IP, with a static IP rebooting the router will make no difference right?

Purely out of curiosity's sake rememeber! :D
