View Full Version : Profile dropped, speed slow...

Been noticing slow speeds the past couple of days.

Here is a current speed test which tallies with current my IP profile below:

I normally get speeds that I'm more than happy with, nothing has changed on my PC & I'm not using a router.

Is this something that sometimes happens that will eventually "fix itself", or should I raise a ticket if nothing changes in the next few days?

Check that all your phones, sky box (biggest offender) etc have mircofilters. Have you installed any new phone equipment recently?

Edit: Try your modem in the test socket of your master socket before raising any ticket. This will rule out any issues internal to your house.

Any chance you put up xmas lights or similar around the 19th when the sync/profile dipped?

Everything is microfiltered & there's no Skybox.

No, I haven't installed any new phone equipment either, but one thing I've just remembered is that yesterday — possibly around the same time as I realised my speed was low — I noticed that the landline signal had some mild interference.

After about an hour the signal had returned to normal & has remained that way ever since, but my connection speed hasn't. But could this be connected?

Just tried plugging directly into the test socket thing & there appears to be no change:

Nope. In fact the only Christmas lights are the ones round my lounge window which I never took down from last year!

it definately looked like some interference which dropped the sync which obviously drops the profile.

Have you replaced the filter just in case it has become faulty? Faulty filters tend to put noise on the voice line.

I've just changed the filter - no change...:(

So changed filter, and still hear noise on the line if you pick up the phone?

These type of problems are a pain to pin point, but if there is noise on the line if you pick up the phone the filters usually are the first to check. Failing that finding some other source of interference. Even dodgy extension cables (if any)

Any new electrical items been put in lately? What time do you put your heating on (I know a daft one, but ive known this to happen!)

The phone line signal has been fine since yesterday, or at least it sounds like it.

I've got no dodgy extension cables. The only heating is a storage heater in the hall which has pretty much been on all winter.

The only new electrical item in the same room is a new surge protector but this is still in it's box! I can honestly say that everything has remained the same for as long as I can remember.

I'm stumped.

that dont mean the problem is identical mate, lots of factors to rule out, especially this time of year, with darkness falling earlier therefore streetlamps coming on early, and theres xmas lights which play havoc on dsl at the best of times.

Post your router stats Mafferz, thats a good place to look also.

Looking at your router stats would help a lot with this.

Perhaps it was a temporary noise problem that has dropped your IP Profile. Now that it has cleared, you might be syncing at a decent speed again but it will take a few days (up to 5+ days sometimes) for your IP Profile to rise again.

The last time this happened to me I rang support and it was rectified while I was on the phone to the guy so why wait 5 days

ring support m8

I know you mean well m8 but 9-10 people dont have any faults there end

If that is the case, quick call wont hurt :D

And yes, with BT running profiles etc, and faults, dont even mention faults to me! :D

I can't post any stats as I'm currently not using a router.

Currently making do with an ISP freebie USB modem. It's actually been quite reliable since my router died a few months back.

I'm awaiting delivery of a new router as we speak, because my girlfriend wants wireless, but I'm dreading the thought of sharing a connection at these speeds.

The BT Speedtester shows your synch rate has gone back up to 7456, but your profile is still 2500 - this should automatically improve over the next 3-5 days, so no need to raise a ticket or call support, unless your profile fails to rise as it should.

Thanks for that Jaggies. Fingers crossed!

Damn - speed seems to be getting worse, it's been like this all day:

I'll be patient though & hope that it does return to normal in the next few days...

Speedtest.net is not the greatest, especially their ping times. The best one to use is the BT Speedtester (http://www.speedtester.bt.com/) which shows your IP Profile as well as your synch rate. You should be looking for it to have increased from the 2500 you had in the one you posted above.

Okey doke - thanks. I admit, the only reason I use Speedtest.net is for the ease of posting of a nice-looking, dated image!

No change as yet, still too early I suppose:

Turn modem off for 30 minutes.

Thanks for that suggestion |2eason, but thankfully my profile has automatically risen. I literally went to the pub, came back & yes! it looks like it has returned to normal:

thats great news its all good again,

i was going to say i think i know the prob and solution's to it,

apparently its those pesky birds, mainly robins, but the worst offenders are the pidgins as your profile drops right down, like your did. <--- I'm joking

or maybe its one of those things that magicaly happen in the world of electronics

i used to worry about mines a lot, but sheet happens and 9/10 its no-ones fault,

hell i have even given adsl24 (mainly james) email after email about speeds/profiles

im sure everyday they get the same crap, and there is one that will need properly fixed (filter or somit)

at end of the day we all got our health,

so wots the point in worrying about it or moving isp's

if it works..................DON'T FIX IT

as it will all come right in the end................. :)
