Hi,

I posted my migration request today and I'm looking forward to joining you guys. I've heard nothing but good things and this forum seems great.

I was wondering if you guys could help me out with something though. These are the stats from my router regarding my line.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3776 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 49 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 3 db 18 db

I am quite far from my exchange, 2.5km as the crow flies and so I know the speed I am currently getting is about right.

I am a bit worried however by the downstream Noise Margin as I've been led to believe that it's meant to be above 6db (can't remember where I heard that from).

Can anyone let me know if my figures look OK or if something needs checked out as the attenuation and noise margin figures don't mean much to me.

Thanks.

Your stats will be best with the router plugged into the test socket behind the master socket - might be worth checking them there to see if they're better than what you've posted. If they are, then check out your extension wiring. Also, the ring wire should be disconnected as this can act as an aerial and drag in interference.

That downstream SNR margin is low. You'll have synched with a margin of 6, presumable earlier in the day but the margin can drop at night due to radio frequency interference, particularly if your telephone line is strung on poles, picking up RFI.

If the margin falls too low your connection will drop, so it's important to have a good router to hang on with a low margin. Yours is doing o.k. by the look of things. I wouldn't reboot it with the margin that low (at night), as you'd resynch at a lower speed.

Check out this site (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/lowSNR.htm) for a few tips.

Hi - and welcome to ADSL24 :)

The SNR will vary at different times of the day, so you may find it to be much higher in the daytime than in the evenings - that is normal.

Check out www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php to make sure your line is optimised...
