View Full Version : Wow... How Technology Changes
In the 7 years i've been using the internet i've gone from downloading at 4.5 KB/Sec to 730 KB/Sec.
In the 7 years i've been using a computer i've gone from a Pentium 75mhz with 8mb ram to a 3000mhz with 1024mb ram.
In the 8 years i've been using a mobile i've gone from a Big Brick, with sticky-up antenna, few crappy ringtones and no extras to a small compact phone with a built in 2mp camera, mp3player, radio, web browser and every feature known to man (I love my SE K750i).
It's scary how fast technology is growing... just imagine what it would be like in another 10 years. (providing of course we havn't been invaded by Aliens or Nuke'd by Iraq)
Yeah - look at prices - about 4 years ago I paid a bargain £325 for my IIyama 17in TFT - now you can get a 19in (other brand) for £100 or less -
Remember starting at work with a Toshiba laptop that had a massive 20mb (yes megabytes) hard disk around 1990 - cost around two grand
Problem is that software specially MS OS gets more bloated - look at min specs for Vista

I'm not bothering with Vista, i mean why fix it when it's not broken. Windows 98SE, nice and stable > Windows ME.... crap, always crashing > Windows XP..... not had any problems with it.
I know what you mean regarding software becoming more bloated... I removed Norton Antivirus the other day and my system seems like it's running on air now.
Makes you wonder why so many people grumble at broadband prices. These days, people want a top quality ISP for peanuts and then complain if they don't get it

14k to 28k to 56k to isdn to broadband
telephone bills pre 0800 and 0808 dialup where 250 to 300 quid a month
isdn paying for homehighway and 2 phone lines for a whooping 64k/128k 120 a qtr
from a 486 dx 8mb ram to a duo e6600 oc's to 3.6ghz 4 gig ddr2 800 ram
and here is a a shocker i don't own any music cd's at all and have no mp3's at all i still have good old 45's 33's and some 78's :)
why because i preffer the old sound of music from a record instead of some digital enhanced and mucked about with cd/mp3
btw mobile phone jammers are great fun especially if you take em to the pictures makes a change not to hear one go off during a film :))

Like the idea of mobile phone jammers.
I think buses trains and tubes should ban mobiles they are so irritating if you are on a long journey and can't get any peace.
I also object to people in libraries surfing on the library computer and yakking on their mobile at the same time. In my library the comp section is next to the CD,DVD lending section and they play music in that section and you can hear it in the comp section and it's loud.
Whatever happened to silence in a library ?
I'm still using a VCR I bought in 1990 I don't have a DVD recorder. I still have a turntable as I like the sound of LP's.
I still use a regular Tv I don't have an LCD.
I have multisat and really like the fact I can get thousands of Tv and radio channels from all over the world for free. I like the fact I can route my voice calls thru a cheaper provider than BT even though I have a BT line.
I want to have a wide choice.

Dialup used to cost over £20/month...
I can't understand people either, when I was on dialup I used to connect at about 41kbps with a download speed of just 5KB/sec. At local rates that used to cost me £2.70 per hour during the day. If you went on the internet for just 1 hour a day (peak) then it would end up costing you £18.90 a week  x 4 weeks = £75.60 +.
Over £75 quid a month for a crappy dialup connection, 1 hour per day, not being able to use the phone at the same time.
Now you can get a decent 24/7 highspeed internet connection for £20ish a month and people moan because they can only download at 300KB/Sec in the evening. They should go back to Dialup for a month, they would soon stop moaning.

Anyone old enough to remember the Amstrad PCW? How proud I was to get the 512 (£100 from my employers) and upgrade it to a whole 1MGb of memory. Am I just being nostalgic or was Locoscript the best WP ever? Of course, you could forget about the internet - it was, theoretically, possible but only if you had an advanced degree in IT and electronics.
