View Full Version : Connection "Falling Over"

My connection is always kept on because of the setup we have at home..... all the family using the web.

I am often finding that our connection "falls over" this has been happening since broadband came into our house... usually when important mail is expected or close to an E bay auction finishing....... you know, just when you need it the most!

It has happened with a variety of routers, all of which refuse to reboot after I switch them off........... they cool down and all is fine.

So my conclusion is router overheating, (for a quick fix I even cool it with a hairdyer on cold setting) has anybody else experienced this? Is it a known/common fault/problem with routers? And most importantly, if it is a known problem can anybody suggest a piece of kit which is "heat resistant"? Please.

Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian
I had the same problem with my Belkin router. I solved it by pinching a trivet from the kitchen, and standing the router on that. The air can circulate all round it. No probs since then........and it looks good too.
Some routers have stands supplied with them so they can be stood on end rather than flat, presumably for the same reason.

Thanks Robbie, mine is on end, in it's plastic support..... I've got an aluminium stand from another router. I'll give it a go............. when I get it back from the pal I've loaned it to!

Does it actually lose SYNC? If so, then it's not an overheating issue - its a line problem :)

Hi James, here I show my utter ignorance........... pardon? How could I tell please?
Thanks

Of course :)

Whe nyour connection dies... does the light on your modem/router go out (the DSL one?) If so, that would mean you are losing connection to the exchange (thus a line issue)... or does your router still say you are connected ok but you just can't get anwhere?

Ah. thanks James.......... the latter. all lights blazing.

It's currently sitting on a metal joist hanger......... that should dissipate some heat (I hope)!

I had it happen to one of mine in the middle of last summer (when it was blazing hot) and the router was inside a cupboard at the time.
