View Full Version : 21cn?!

After wandering around the internet avoiding my revision I come across the fact that my exchange is going to be one of the first to move over to BT's 21CN system in a few months time.

Looking at the info on the net BT warns of 'disruptions to broadband and telephone for the weeks and months leading up to the switchover' but that afterwards I will be able to get better broadband.

Should I be happy that I am going to be one of the first? any ideas how much this 'better' connection will be and how much 'better' it will be.

Cheers

I wouldn't want to be the first with anything BT is trying, tbh, but you may get lucky. :)

ADSL2 speeds will depend very much on your distance from the exchange. There's a checker somewhere (maybe on thinkbroadband?) where you put in your attenuation & SNR and the checker will calculate your likely throughput. I'll edit this post if I find the link.

Ircsum.

Found one here (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/maximum_speed_calculator.htm).

Hi

I was curious of how you get the stats for your line attenuation & SNR figurers

Could anyone please advice
Thanks
Simon

Hi Simon
What router or modem are using?

Try this Simon
I'm assuming is a DG834, without any letters on the end

Netgear
DG834
DG834G
There is a page within the router GUI that displays the line stats. Click the link below.

Hi Robbie

You actually triggered my memory about where to look after your last post. I have only just brought this router, so did not realize that I could go into the control panel to find info

Anyway, details are below. Do you know how to interpret stats

Regards
Simon

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7104 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 8 db
Noise Margin 4 db 26 db

I'm no expert here Simon, but they are a strange set of figures. :D
Downstream connection speed is low, you could be interleaved. (8128 is max)
Upstream attenuation is normally around half that of downstream, are you sure its 8 and not 18 or something around that mark?
Downstream Noise margin is very low at 4db, you are only just hanging on to a connection with that. Again, are you sure it is 4 and not 14?
Maybe an "expert" here will see this and advise you :o

Hi Robbie

I am not sure about the numbers
Today when I checked my router stats they showed the following

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7104 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 8 db
Noise Margin 10 db 26 db

Showing that the Noise margin had changed from 4db to 10db

I wonder if being in the 10 training period has something to do with numbers

Any one else got any thoughts

Thanks again
Simon

Hi Simon
It might be best to wait until the 10 days are up before making any decisions. Sorry, I forgot you were in the training period :o

nvm it's been answered else where. Let's hope when this 21cn thing rolls out I won't be too interupted.

Hi Robbie

Yes, that is probably sensible

I was pleased to see that I was getting 5.5mb at my last speed test, which even at this point is a 1mb faster than I was getting at plusnet

Thanks again

So, this 21CN thingie...my exchange will be enabled in November, and my transfer rates will be improved. My ADSL24 package is <=8meg, does this mean I'll have to migrate to another ISP to take advantage? Or will Enta be knocking out another package?

James

Enta will be offering up to 24Meg as will all ISP's once it's all starting to work...

You are around 160 metres from your exchange (as the crow flies).

Line Attenuation 11db

Based on the attenuation you entered, we estimate that your line can support around 16 - 22 Mbps on ADSL2+.

now all i have to do is wait for the second comming of christ
or having my exchange upgraded
toss up which will happen first imho

James

One *one* of my lines at home I have Be*, and get 15-16Mbps with attenuation 30 :), so with an attenuation of 11 you're laughing...
