View Full Version : Windows live messenger
Hi folks,
After switching my isp details and logging onto my shiny new adsl24 account windows live messenger will no longer sign me in, complaining about key ports not being open. I've made absolutely no changes to my firewall config etc. (even tried with it turned off), still using opendns but it still won't sign in.
Just as a random guess, my hostname is set to xx-xx-xxx-x.no-dns-yet.enta.net (obviously with the x's replaced with my ip) and I'm wondering if it's just with my account being new and when it resolves to something else am I likely to be able to get on?
go into the start menu...
click 'run'
type in the following...
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then press ok
then go back into 'run' and type the following...
regsvr32 mssip32.dll
then press ok
then go back into 'run' and type the following...
regsv32 initpki.dll
then press ok
Depending what version your running of course

Nope, didn't sort it... I've tried a lot of the tricks floating around on google. I think it may be a bigger issue since I'm having trouble accessing a lot of the MS sites (technet, help.live.com, spaces.live.com).

Best way is to uninstall it and start again , it can be a pain in the arse MSN :)
Already tried it, like I said I think it's a bigger issue now.

Hmmm same here but msn running ok ?
Can you access microsoft.com over http? I can't seem to access any of their sites.
You can't 'ping' microsoft.com, which is why you get no response. m.smith, check the MTU value in your router. For some reason, when connected to ADSL24 you need to reduce the value from the usual 1500 to something lower. Some use 1460, some 1400.
The setting can be found in your router. Change it (making note of the current setting first!), reboot router and see if that helps.

Try reducing the MTU setting in the router.
If it is at 1500 it could be too high, it worked for me and somewhere on the adsl 24 site i think it recomends 1464 or something like that but have a look it is there somewhere.
Hope that helps.

I've set it to 1400, rebooted router, repaired network connection, still no change :\
Try this

Seems that changing from PPPoA to PPPoE sorted it, think I was set up using pppoe with AOL too but must have forgot to change it when I set up my router again. D'oh.
