Well, we need to know more information than that. Please can you provide some BT speedtest results at different times of the day, and also advise what set up you have, e.g. are you in the master socket, which router do you have and are you using wireless etc...

Those speeds are well within the reasonable limit, each one over 3Mb. Although you should see higher at times with your 6500 profile, BT won't treat the speeds you see as any fault. Have you tried changing the MTU to 1500 in the Belkin router setup as this can help with browsing?

What is the best MTU setting with the Netgear Router James and do you have to do something different with my O/S being Vista.

sorry for crashing thread but I to am having speed problems, is this a temp problem?
I am suposed to be 8mb but getting about 300kbps very rarely 500kbps most of the time my upload speeds are quicker than downloads. When i joined adsl24 about Nov i was getting 5.5mbps down, left Pipex because of poor speeds but this is worse. Tried master socket testpoint no difference

I would try 1492 and 1478, see which works best for you :)

MTU of 1492 works fine here with a Netgear DG834GT.

I was under the impression Vista was self tuning as regards its network settings ?
Also why the need to change the mtu to a lower value than the internet standard of 1500 ?
Just curious thats all :)

The MTU can be changed in the router settings as well as the OS.
A lot of users find that an MTU of 1500 doesn't give a fully optimised connection.
The 1500 quoted as the internet standard can result in packet loss and a lower sync. I've always thought it's best to have a play with it to see what suits your particular connection.

For some peculiar reason, Enta connections don't seem to 'like' an MTU setting of 1500 with certain routers. For example, when I moved to ADSL24 from F2S, where I had no problems with an MTU setting of 1500 on a D-Link router, I found that I could no longer browse any Microsoft sites until I lowered the MTU setting.

ADSL24 used to recommend an MTU setting of 1500 on their Activation Details e-mail details but I believe that this recommendation was dropped after I reported my findings to James back in 2007.

Yup! Got to say ADSL24 - that there IS a speed issue here!!!

When I first joined I had MUCH better speeds (well u would wouldn't you!) and this is todays:

http://www.speedtest.net/result/429758429.png

Seeing as I am on a Office package u gotta admit this is crap!!!

Explanation due.

NO - I haven't changed anything my end
YES - I have raised a ticket
YES - I am not happy. At all.
YES - I expect u will give me some claptrap about it being weekend and everyone is downloading porn / gaming

The sort of speeds I USED to get is below in my signature!!!!!

Explanation?

Your speedtest in your sig was run on a tuesday at 6.31 pm. If you run a test at the same time on a weekday you will see the same top speed - so you are comparing a non-busy time with a busy time which is not going to be directly comparable.

It may well have been faster during busy times in the past because Enta were able to keep lighting more bandwidth to help with the busy periods (e.g. weekend) but because of the rise in bandwidth costs and the fact that them lighting more capacity just for most people to be downloading huge amounts more quickly does not make good viable business sense as they lose huge amounts of money on this.

Hi James. I kind of take your point but maybe it is time to clamp down on file sharers. I myself do not indulge in such unsocial bandwidth hogging activities and why should those of us who use the web for 'legal' purposes suffer as a result?

If u incidentally look at my line reports since I joined they have got progressively worse.

How do you know people are file sharing they could be using their bandwidth for backing up servers or watching online TV which if you have used a bandwidth monitor uses quite a lot of bandwidth.

I myself do not indulge in such unsocial bandwidth hogging activities

How do we know what you use your bandwidth for sounds like a double bluff to me LOL.

Considering you know i cant see what you have used your bandwidth for how do i know what your using it for, not that im bothered what you use it for its got nothing to do with me.

Have you checked to see how much someone can use up bandwidth wise if they use it for remotely backing up their servers, its quite a few GB depending on the server.
