Hi all,
Been a while since I've posted on here and as such I'm not upto speed on current network problems.
Over the last weel or so my youngest son has complained to me that the internet connection when he is plaing call of duty online on his PS 3 is slow. I'm content this isn't a reduced net speed problem per se as I'm still able to download in excess of 700kb per sec.
My router stats state the following:
System Up Time 10:23:17
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 394 3323 0 1 12 10:22:40
LAN 10M/100M 973 19643 0 15 35 10:23:09
WLAN 11M/54M 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6944 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.0 db 20.0 db
Noise Margin 9.5 db 24.0 db
The only thing I've done within the last week to my system is updated the router firmware. Is there a problem with game speed, are others experiencing a similar problem or is it likely to be my router firmware update?
Thanks all,
Pete

Hi
I have been playing cod4 on my ps3 and everything is fine on my adsl24 connection. The speedtest picture in your post shows a ping of 38ms so that should be fine for online gaming with little lag. Maybe you could try various games to see if the problem is just on one particular game ?

Thanks for your reply, the original signature is now very old, I've attached one today today where the ping is much slower. I did the same this first thing this morning and the ping was 130ms. Is the ping the likely cause of the problem?

I play COD4 & COD WAW on my PS3 online and pings of anything above 45ms start to cause lag issues, 85ms plus and it's almost not worth playing, and in the 100ms+ range deffo not worth playing, have you powered your router down for a couple of minutes since you updated it? Maybe just needs a power cycle to kick it back into touch.
Pings from speedtesters are pretty unreliable, mine is 10ms faster doing a test directly via the command line.

Yes it is always better getting your ping result via the command line. The lower the ping the better your chance of success online, in cod 4 you can use the select button when you are playing and it gives you an idea of your connection with a 4 bar system. 1 orange bar is useless, 2 yellow is just about ok, 3 green is fine and 4 green is great. Not sure if the games you are playing have a similar way of testing your connection while you are playing.

Thanks for the further replies. When playing the game it usually shows 3-4 solid bars in green which I'm aware indicates a good strong signal.
I've reboot my router this morning. Via the ping command I did this test:

This seems a bad result to me. Should the ping be this high, is this worth raising a ticket?
***Update- I also did this which seems much better

This results seems much better, I'll ask my sone when he can to see if game lag is still present.

Hi
I just pinged the flexisoft.com and got a 140+ ping and then adsl24.co.uk and got a ping around 30ms. So at least the high ping to flexisoft is not confined to your own connection.
The 140ms ping might have something to do with the flexisoft.com host being located in Dever, probably a good 4000 miles away....
