View Full Version : Stability just added to line options

I've just noticed that a new option - 'stability' has been added to line options in My Account. Is this just for ADSL2+, or does it work with ADSL too?

ADSL2+ only...

Catman

I thought it was for ADSL Max ?

It was just for ADSL2+ previously but I'm sure James mentioned somewhere that MAX users would also get this when the new packages arrive. As it doesn't appear under connection details does this mean MAX users can't do this still as there isn't a way to show which setting you are currently on as far as I can see. :s

[edit] And as I post the option disappears. :p

The option is available on WBC and IPSC connections. James has said that he is introducing the option as you move over to the new packages.

You're not losing it ;)

It was available momentarily yesterday afternoon whilst I was implementing the new code and testing it out. It should be available within the next week for everyone, regardless of package or product, ADSL Max or WBC/ADSL2+.

James

AIUI there are four nominal SNR values 6, 9, 12 and 15.
I suspect that the three stability options are based on 9, 12 and 15, any facts/thoughts about this?

As a result of sorting out a problem with a neighbour's router I have an SNR stuck at 15 with a sync rate of around 7000.

I have two routers but neither of them are compatible with DMT, if I borrow a router that is I can lower the SNR to 9 and sometimes 6 and sync at a stable 8128.

Do you think that the new stability option will convince the DLM to lower my SNR?

This is probably a theoretical question as I hope to move to ADSL2+ in the near future and hope that this will erase my line history and give me a fresh start, do you think that this is true?

If the option becomes live I'll post back with what happens.

From what James has said in the past I think that:-

Standard - equates to 6db
Stable - equates to 9 or 12 db (managed by the DLM)
Super Stable - equates to 15 db

Is this feature available to use on adsl max connection right now James?

Cheers

Its in the control panel as I've been given the nod that it's available but I expect it to be a week or so before it begins to actually work properly on BT's side ;)

Erm, what is this stability business? Anything to gain?

Error...

No changes have been requested for the line - please contact support.

Any reason for getting that after trying to select a stability option?

James

You chose Standard whilst already on Standard? Everyone is on Standard regardless of current SNR/interleaving values. Therefore, you need to choose Stable and then after a few days once that happens (you will be emailed) go back in and change back to Standard.

Thanks. I wasn't sure whether it "knew" current SNR values or not. Will get on with it now.

*gulp*

Cheers, I had the same issue as _proverbial_. Though the stability option has now dissapeared from my line options page, it was there a few hours back.

Thats because BTs system is not working (as expected) so we're waiting until its fixed before offering it properly :)

Still waiting for an explanation what this stability lark is. Unless nobody knows because BT doesn't know how to work it ;)

It sets your target SNR which is used to determine your sync rate. The higher the SNR, the lower the sync rate, but the more "noise margin" there is between the ADSL signal and the background noise.

Stable sets a target SNR of 6db (so a fast sync speed, but less noise margin - so you may loose the ADSL sync due to background noise) etc etc as per my previous post:-

From what James has said in the past I think that:-

Standard - equates to 6db
Stable - equates to 9 or 12 db (managed by the DLM)

So in english, what is the better option? Not for online gaming, but for general browsing and mega downloads.

The stability options only affect the speed (not the latency). So it really depends on what you want.

If you want a slower connection that never drops the ADSL signal, select super stable. However, if speed is your main concern (and you don't mind the occasional ADSL signal resync) select Standard. If both speed and stability are equally important select Stable.

My DS Margin is only 4 at the moment, so I guess I won't be able to improve my speed at all? My line is very stable and always has been, apart from when I tried it without interleaving when it was terrible. I sync at around 3000kbps, plus or minus 500 depending on it's mood.

zedbra,

The DS Margin tends to drop gradually, the longer that the ADSL signal has been active. You will probably find that your target margin is 6db at the exchange. So setting it to Stable will not make any difference, except it won't go up if there are line stability issues.

Hi, Did this option vanish as it no longer shows in my profile :(

I really want to get off the 15db that I am on and hopefully get more speed than my 2.5mb connection.

Anything further on this James? Have BT responded yet?

Yes, but at present Enta are absolutely flooded with internal problems they are sorting so I don't expect them to pass the fix on to us quickly.

Any news on this James? I am sure that you are very busy at the moment.

I am currently the wrong side of BT's profiling system and would be very grateful if this option was enabled.

Well, basically, it is not working just yet. Our side is still ready for when BT sort it,

Any news yet? If there are still issues with the BT/Enta XML feed, are you able to request it manually now?

James - any news on this yet?

I am not personally that interested at the moment, as the DLM decided to lower my target SNR to 6db in the early hours of this morning; several months after it went up to 9db!!!!! Although it would be useful to be able to prevent it going back up.

James
16/06/2009, 20:41
No :( Not the answer you wanted to hear, but they have just not done anything with it. I am beginning to think they cant get it working at all.
