hi all

im a pipex customer who doesnt hate pipex service or speed but rather hates the price. i havnt had any real trouble with them but i cant put up with £25 for 2mb or move to their max with 12month contract. i dont download as much as i used to so paying £25 for 2mb seems way to much.

so did some searching and im looking at adsl24, its alittle cheaper but does fit my criteria. at this time im looking for Max service, roughly £20-25, with little contract length. also 300gb/month is 3x the bandwidth i do so this service seems great and way generous. obviously with limits now and uncertainly of where i live in few months and what adsl i can get then, ill have to cut back on my usage, so 30gb seems right plus the excess if i cant change my ways right away. i have questions and i did post on another thread but this forum seems better to ask in.

My questions are:

1. is there any hidden fees beyond paying for adsl24 1st month £19.99, (any connection charge or credit card surcharge, im migrating and want to pay by DD)

2. with normal adsl and rapidshare i disconnect and reconnect to change my ip to bypasss the 1hour wait can i do this with the 'Max' service?

3. i have the purple frog modem (speedtouch330)when i joined pipex will i need to get new modem or do/can i get one from adsl24?
pc stays on 24/7, 360(shares same monitor too) is hardwired to pc with ICS. so not looking/needing modem router or wlan router.

4. i see there is no throttling but ther is load balancing, so if the weekend is busy what kinds of speeds can i expect for downloading and pings for gaming?
(mostly XBL (content and gaming especially on weeknights), torrent (overnight), d/l from gametrailers.com+RS (day) , other than that regular surfing), so would adsl24 suit me?

thanks
Sol

Hi Sol.

1. is there any hidden fees beyond paying for adsl24 1st month £19.99, (any connection charge or credit card surcharge, im migrating and want to pay by DD)

First payment is by card, but monthly it's either card or DD. No other hidden fee's

2. with normal adsl and rapidshare i disconnect and reconnect to change my ip to bypasss the 1hour wait can i do this with the 'Max' service?

Not usually as all our services are on a static IP

3. i have the purple frog modem (speedtouch330)when i joined pipex will i need to get new modem or do/can i get one from adsl24?

That modem is fine, but it would be an advantage for you to get a dedicated router for higher speeds and better stability. Check this one out: http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=845 as the USB ones are not recommended for 8Mb speeds.

4. i see there is no throttling but ther is load balancing, so if the weekend is busy what kinds of speeds can i expect for downloading and pings for gaming?
(mostly XBL (content and gaming especially on weeknights), torrent (overnight), d/l from gametrailers.com+RS (day) , other than that regular surfing), so would adsl24 suit me?

As more people are online of course speeds will slow down slightly, but there is plenty of network capacity available and the latest 622Mbps pipe is now online which adds much more capacity. Pings are pretty good, most members here will confirm that 15-30 are the norm for UK servers, 25-45 for European servers etc.

I think you'll also find the vast majority are very happy with us in terms of speed, support, price and reliability! (see http://www.dslzoneuk.net/isp_ratings_comments?isp=98 etc)

Hope this helps

thanks for the info.

had a talk with pipex last week and they were no help, had pipex since 03 and only called CS like 3 times so this was the only time they werent helpful. atleast the kind ppl at thinkbroadband are there to help.

the situation now is (didnt kno about 30 day notice) i have to wait to get the MAC. i get billed on May 9th, so i asked when was the best time to ask for a MAC and i was told this.

from another forum
If you asked for a MAC on the 1st of May, it should arrive by the 8th which would mean it runs to the 7th June which is before your payment is due. As for adsl24, most ISPs take a few days to set you up - 5 seems to be standard. Check with them, but if it is 5 days, give them the MAC on something like the 1st of June and you should be up and running just as the Pipex account expires (and owe them nothing).

does this sound right? i havnt changed isp ever since getting broadband so dont really know much about migrating. all i do know is i dont want to pay for another month, get charged twice from pipex and not have an interruption in my service.

thanks
Sol

it took about 4 or 5 days to transfer me over, ADSL24 relies on BT for the actual migration but providing BT are on the ball, yeah that's about right.

As for your previous questions, this ISP is very good for gaming, I went from unstable pings 40+ with virgin to 24 ping to UK servers and around 36-42 to europe - so much better.

Welcome in advance :)

Just pester pipex as its a legal requirement for them to give you a mac code in 5 days from asking for it...

ok iv asked for my MAC (forgot yesterday) so in 25 days i should be signing up on June 1st.

im gonna get a new router but dont want an expensive one as i only have my 1 pc and psp that will be wireless and the 360 will be hardwired.
would this router suit my needs? reviews seem good and its a great price factoring in googles checkout £10 off offer.

Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Home Gateway WAG200G
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/118662

and my bro has one of these he's not using so hopefully i can get it. if not 50.83 for both from ebuyer

Linksys Wireless 54mbps PCI
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/45602

also would the router be suitable as replacement for the Orangebox router? (cous has Orange and he cant seem to get it to work so he needs new router)

thanks

:( thought i posted earlier today but must have pressed preview by mistake.

anyway iv asked for my MAC from pipex today (they offered me a terrible deal to stay:) ) so hopefully it will come this week. then im thinking of joining 1st of June. :D

quick question if i leave pipex before the 9th of june (next billing date) like mid May do i get any refund from pipex as i paid for 30 days (will be paying the May 9th bill) but not used a full month? also pipex CS told me to migrate on the 25th day after the code was generated, sounds like good advice for a change :D

now onto what i thought i asked before. im looking for new router will this do?
will be connecting my pc and psp on wifi and xbox and 360 hardwired (or just 1 of the xboxs)

Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Home Gateway WAG200G
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/118662

Linksys Wireless 54mbps PCI Adapter Card (hopefully i can get bro to give me his)
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/45602

also my cous has Orangebox router that never works, will this router work as a better option?

thanks

A router is a much better option. The Linksys ones are generally goodso you won't go wrong there. That router from eBuyer will do everything you need :)

thank you James.

i have signed up today and waiting for my activation on the 4th. unfortunately that router i want isnt in stock and i was really hoping to use googles discount. so i might have to use the usb modem for the time being.

i saw that on the day i should leave the router (my case modem software connection) off till 8pm...(looks like ill be missing 1 day of halo beta, ohwell.)

but my pipex runs till the 8 or 9th so on the 4th can i use my pipex and as soon as 8pm comes turn off the connection and enter in the new adsl24 settings or does the adsl have to be off completely?

thanks

If you are using a USB modem, there is no need to have it switched off al day. It's only routers that seem to have the stuck profile bug lately...

On the day of migration, just keep trying your new ADSL24 username/password. As soon as it logs you in - that's it, you have been migrated and you should not use your Pipex login from that point :)

I have a question on that note too...

I'm on dial up now, and get activated with you guys next Tuesday, and I've also got a Speedtouch 330 modem, so what should I do on activation day? Do I install mine and keep trying it throughout the day, or is it best to leave it off until after 8pm? Or does that only apply if you're already on broadband of some sort?
Sorry, completely clueless here!

Cheers,
Jai

guess usb modems can come in handy.

i hope this is my last question, as soon as i can i want to get that router but do i wait after the training to end on the usb modem before connecting it or can i connect it midway?

still waiting on stock of the router (want that desperately for £25, cracking deal)

thanks

since i had my migration date i wanted to order the router in time so i ended up gettin the Netgear DG834G, using my codes it came out to £29, ordered monday and got it today with supersaver delivery (which surprised me). i saw today on ebuyer that the linksys wag200 is back instock and they have raised the price from £35 to £48  , going from the cheapest place on the net to more than others like broadbandbuyer.

unfortunately i use my 360 with ICS on NIC (streaming, halo3 beta, cod3) so cant connect the router until i can get the wireless adapter off my bro or i can give up Live...yea right.

i saw that Netgear have a promo, buy the router and get free WG111 usb adapter (up to the retailer tho), so i complained to amazon that i didnt get 1 so ill see if they send me one free.

got another question, when i went from dial up to pipex 512 years ago i was given a date that i would be connected but i was connected days earlier, can this be the case with the migration too or is June 4th the day i will be connected?

thanks

James

Migrations are usually on the specified day. New activations tend to be done a day or two early.

thanks james.

i remembered i had that psp wifi max thing and iv set up the router so i could find out my attenuation stats which i never knew as being on usb modem and iv checked on dslzone for my speed

and i got
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 29 db 7.5 db
Noise Margin 27 db 30 db

Based on the values you entered, we estimate that your line can support around 6.7 - 7.5 Mbps.

so i am looking at atleast 6.7mbps, is that good or ok?

also what does 'Results are based on a SNR of 6dB.' mean?

thanks
