Hi,

My connection has been active since 12 April but seems not to be performing as well as I hoped. :(

Specs
computer
3 mhz processor
2 gig ram

winxp pro

modem router
Safecom SAHR-4114

Firstly I would like to say that i think your guide is wrong. I tried the following log in details with no luck.

Username: speedtest@speedtest_domain
Password: 123
modem set with this loging takes me to web site but just get mostly white screen and no

speed test info.

or this one

Username: bt_test_user@adsllogin.co.uk
Password: 123
http://217.35.209.142/
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

However the login you supplied me with works :) and i can do the test with my login details at
http://www.speedtest.net/ whcih were performed between 3am and 5am.

several tests to London gave
average
1500kb/s down
ping 61
367 kb/s up

Dublin was worse
1200kb/s down
ping 115 and many times even higer
369 kb/s up

This is with my modem router reset to default.
I have tried changing the default MTU setting 1492 to your suggested setting of 1478 but this makes no difference to the speed test.

When i signed up at the web site i was informed after entering my phone number that my line should be capable of 5mb connection. Any suggestions on how i can improve things as not too happy with the speedtest results.

Regards,

George

P.S
This is a new line enabled by B.T as address newly built so maybe B.T are at fault.

More info.

I have a line filter at the main socket. the modem connects to one terminal and the telephone to the other. no other line sockets in the property. I have opened the B.T main socket and there are only 2 wires connected blue and white wire. I have also swapped the filter with my spare and still get the same speed test results. Only setting changed on the modem was the MTU setting to 1478.

Just did the B.T test heres the info
http://speedtester.bt.com/

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 6000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 4305 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please

contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Your line fine, as its connecting at the fastest speed posible for your service. Your profile is also fine, being at 6000 (that mean you will get up to 6Mb)

Your download speed of 4350 Kbps is 4Mb which is acceptable for an 8Meg service. Granted, many people get higher, and you should be no different.

You should monitor the BT speedtest results over a few days at morning, after dinner and late at night if possible - to see what each one gives. Also simply rebooting the router may get you on a different gateway with more capacity available.

When ISP's quote 5Mb thats connection rate to the exchange. As you are getting over 7Mb, that statement was true.

It's certainly not a line fault if you're getting 4Mb+ speeds - some people can't even get 512K still so at least you have a good line.

I've also heard a lot of reports about the speedtest.net site giving results all over the place. Try to stick to the BT one as at least there is then a record of your results for BT to access should we raise a fault with them.

Let us know what happens with the speed tests :)

Thank's for the quick reply James,

Speeds a bit better now that i got system mechanic to change back from windows default to system mechanic internet optimized settings.

I shall monitor the BT speedtest results over a few days see what happens. However i doubt my connection is currently 4mb unless B.T are stating peak figures as all the web sites i go to give average of between 2 and 3mb second. This sound right given the time it takes for a test picture to download. Used to download in about 10 seconds when on my 1mb service now on ADSL24 the pic loads in 3 to 5 seconds. So this is still much better ISP to be with so very pleased. Although connection not too good for an 6000 kbps profile.

Is it possible my line speeds may inprove in the future or does this only happen for the 10 day period?

Also are there any settings in modem that i can tinker with that have great effect on download speeds.

Thank once again James.

regards,

George

George - the speed is always varialbe as this is the nature of the Internet but you should see top speeds as times...

Jackal - That's a great test result :)
