What router do you have and can you use something like DMT tool to resync without rebooting? If not you'll just have to wait. You could try rebooting early in the morning when there's less traffic/contention if you can't resync manually. BT are the proverbial chocolate teapot in all this.

what was a bit of a sod is that i had a power cut in my 10 days training to when i first started a few months ago :(.

DMT tool (http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/DMTv8.htm) works with Netgear DG834G v4 and GT

You don't *need* DMT tool, and BT's systems don't differentiate between a resync done with the router still on, or with a reboot so it makes no difference. If you are only syncing at 1728 then just reset the router physically until it syncs at a higher speed.

He could disconnect/reconnect via the router admin pages as another option, rather than power off/on. But DMT does give the option to amend the snr figure if it's higher than expected.

I use it myself but you can't change the target SNR margin because that is set by BT and if his low sync speed is because the target SNR margin is too high, there is nothing he can do except wait for BT's systems to lower it in time, which in theory should happen automatically.

With certain routers you can override your target SNR, I'm using a tweaked SNR now infact! It's really simple to do aswell :)

I know you can tweak the SNR margin to be higher at your end, but the target SNR margin is set by BT at their end.

Set your router to defaults, remove the tweaks and then connect - the SNR margin will then be as low as it can be. If you want it higher, yes you can tweak it to make it higher at you end. I have used DMT tool to increase my SNR margin for better stability and lower errors. If you want it to be LOWER, in order to get a higher sync speed (as the OP wants), no, you can't do that at your end, BT have to do it.

No mate, in my router I've set my SNR to 25% and it has lowered it.

If I set my router to default my SNR dots about between 12/15 and I have a low sync, with my tweaked setting my SNR stays around 8 and I sync at the maximum speed.

I'm afraid you're just plain wrong on this one! :)

Would be interesting to hear some other opinions to settle it ;)

I'm with Findlay on this one. DMT can lower (or raise) your snr, but only until the next time the router boots, then you have to run the DMT option again. Once set, the DGTeam firmware will always try to lower (or raise) the snr at time of boot without further input.

I used to be able to "tweak" my SNR on the plain old vanilla ADSL. As soon as I got the raspberry ripple choc chip mint clotted cream ADSL2+ it stopped making any difference. The exchange DSLAM on ADSL2+ does not allow SNR reductions.
