Just got the Netgear DG834GT router and have a few questions. Im a novice to routers:

1) What is the best security? I have WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) at present

2) Is a download of 4.26Mb/s good for a 4500kbps IP profile?

3) If i stay connected for 3 days above my IP Profile then i understand this should go up? Will i have to reboot the router in order to get the extra speed or will it happen automatically?

Cheers

1. WPA2
2. Yes
3. No (automatic if it happens, it's at BT's end not yours)
:D

Ah right. One final thing. How do i view my router stats? I can view the connection speed, Attenuation and noise margin by clicking the Stats button, but ive seen some people have loads of stats like any errors on the line and lost packets etc

Dunno, never bothered with that stuff, I'm confused enough as it is! Have you looked at the Netgear site?

Not yet. Loads of options to mess with. I have a degree in computing and im baffled with most of the stuff you can change :D

Was having problems getting the router to find me PC, until i realised i was connecting it via a phone cable and not the ethernet cable :$

Degree in computing = incompetent at IT? :p:D

IP Profile shot up to 5500kbps, as my speed goes to around 3Mb/s. Does speed normally go down in the evening? (ALT is off)

Do you mean you're syncing at 5500, or your ip profile is 5500? Sounds like the former (you're reading it from your router stats, yes?) - and when your router re-booted BT dropped your profile, hence your download speed has decreased from 4.26 to 3

Welcome to the world of ip profiling

Im reading it from the accounts page on this site. IP Profile was 4500, then i synced higher with my new router and it went up to 5500. I thought you should be getting faster speeds with a higher IP Profile, yet the opposite has happened to me

OK I see. But
a) when did your router reboot exactly? (account page may not have caught up)
b) where are you doing your speed test? (some of 'em are a bit dodgy)

Try either this (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html) or this (http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/) for comparison

a) It rebooted a good few hours before the IP Profile increase
b) http://www.speedtest.net/ - using the server in the UK

The links you gave me give the same results - around 3Mb/s

Will try in morning as speeds this afternoon were fine

Latest speedtest is 5Mb/s

This router is more unstable than my cheapy speedtouch modem :( 4 disconnects overnight

Catman

Are you connecting Wireless or Ethernet? if wireless switch to cable for a while. Most of the settings in the router should not need changing from their defaults until you have a nice stable connection. If they are at default and you are connected via cable and still get disconnects raise a ticket.

Yeah im connected wired and pretty much left the settings. Most of the disconnects happen at night which im not concerned about as i dont use my connection then. If im still getting them during today i will do

Bit concerned its the router as i heard the v5 has cheaper chipset which can drop signal alot more

Connection Speed 6464 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.5 db 16.5 db
Noise Margin 12.0 db 24 db

My stats look good so i dont think its the snr thats causing it. At worst it drops to 10db at night

I just rung 17070 on a BT phone which allowed you to do a quiet line test. I do get abit of noise on the line. Should it be deadly silent?

It should be silent aye, what kind of noise were you getting?

Do you have any phone extensions/sky boxes etc in your house that you could disconnect to test to see if they're the problem?

If not you could always phone BT to test the line/check for faults, if they find a problem in your house they'll charge you though :(

Was a very low buzz. Not loud at all but noticeable if you listen.

I have a phone extenstion that runs from the socket to the router upstairs. Its twisted pair and shielded tho.

Took Sky off the phoneline, and still it was there

If it's a low buzz but no clicks etc it's maybe just your phone speaker volume? Mine buzzes when I call that number but it's my dodgy cordless phones speaker!

If not I'm reaching the limit of my knowledge here so hopefully someone else can help you :D

The connection is fine in the day, its only at night when the snr drops a few db i have issues.

Does the DGTeam Firmware work with the DG834Gv5? I can only find one that is v4 compatible. Maybe changing that may help

Are you saying you're not plugged in to the master socket directly? That could be one issue and will be the first thing BT (or adsl24) will get you to do. Also have you disconnected bell wires from the sockets? Read this (http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/broadbandspeed.html)

Also have you checked the time schedule for your router (admin pages>security>schedule) you may be getting one disconnect at night if you haven't enabled 24 hour continuous service.

Any router will occasionally disconnect but I've found the Netgear to be pretty robust unless you're trying to connect at too low an snr or there's something wrong with your line.

No, the DGTeam Firmware doesn't support the DG834G v5. See here (http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/technical-discussion/18411-dg834gt-pn-n-unofficial-firmware-dgteam.html#post114385) for supported Netgear models.
