hi, ive just moved over to adsl24 and had my connection switched over yesterday. i am aware that it can take up to 10 days for the connection speeds to settle down due to BT throwing different speed profiles at my router to detect errors, however i am getting a solid cap at the moment of 2Mbits/s download and a measley 256 Kbits/s upload (download speed was 1Mbits/s with old isp).

So my question is, is this a normal speed cap for the first day of usage?, does it normally start at 2Mbits/s and then ramp up over the 10 days?, also my upload rate is very low, i am on the "Max Office 45" package so should have upload speeds of around 800 Kbits/s, again is the upload rate also subject to the profiles that BT applies?.

many thanks for any replies!! :-).

paul.

p.s service so far is first class, im impressed, and thats saying something coming from Zen :-).

3com router, ive just had a look and under data rate i got the following which looks very promising, these are the correct speeds i should be able to attain (in a perfect world) so at least thats showing.

Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Up Stream 832 (Kbps.)
Down Stream 8128 (Kbps.)

is this the info you mean?

what router have you got ?

Downstream 8128 kbps Upstream 448 kbps for me as i have the home max 90 package during my training period i had low speeds for awhile but they slowly went up over the 10 day period with those sync figures i would expect you to get close to the max speed. i am afraid you will have to wait and see. unless one of the support guys knows better :)

ok thats fine, im just getting paranoid here reading about that guy who got stuck on the 2mbit profile :-), just to make me feel better, what sort of download and upload rates did you get to begin with durign your training period?.

at the start is was 1.5/2mb then climbed to 3mb went upto 6mb then dropped to 3mb all in the first week then it climbed to full speed the last few days and has been good ever since.

speed drops after 10pm due to everyone starting there offpeak useage but after 1am it normally quickly returns to full speed.

You will eventually get up to the full 8mb (well, 7.15Mb as thats the limit by BT).

Can you run the test at http://speedtester.bt.com and let me know the results?

Thanks

James

Hi james, it kicked in last night, now getting a healthy 778 KB/s download, my only concern is that the upload rate for my connection does still seem to be stuck on 256 Kbits/s, according to the plan i have choosen i should be able to upload at 832Kbits/s.

Odd. What programs are you using to test upload speed? Online testers are not the best. Try uploading a file via FTP to a few sites :)

ok ive run some more tests against known high speed ftp servers, it is a bit better than i thought, speed for upload is 60KB/s, but i still think this is a bit low, are my calculations below right?:-

832/8 = 104 KB/s minus 13% for overhead = approx 90 KB/s

im currently getting 60KB/s so this is a little low, shouldnt this be around 80 - 90 KB/s?

Yes - of course make sure you are not downloading at the same time as uploading

You should see up to 80KB/s in reality...

Checked MTU settings too?

What should your MTU be and how do you check please:confused:

Your router should have an MTU setting which you can change (check your router config pages). Set it to 1478. You can also set it on your PC using this: http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe - choose your network adaptor and set the MTU in the box beside it. Save then reboot :)

just to say thanks for your help james, i did as you suggested and checked my MTU setting and it was incorrect, so i altered it and did a little bit more testing last night. i found the upload rate was mainly bouncing between 70 and 80, so im guessing thats about max, thanks again for your quick response.
