View Full Version : SNR woes

Looking at me SNR is this right? Upstream has been sitting steady at 6db for months, but downstream is jumping up and down. My upstream is faster than downstream?? I notice other peoples seems to be the other way about?:s

Line Attenuation 45 db 15 db
Noise Margin 23 db 6 db

That doesn't look right. Have you raised a ticket about it?

No not yet, maybe i should then:o

Raised a ticket, also going to change my router and see if that helps. Anyone know why my noise is the way it is?

Don't know why the SNR is like that but I am having the same issue, for the last 3 months. SNR at 23dB. Sync and throughput speeds right down.

Have had a ticket going for 3 months but no resolution yet...

So many people rave about the DG834GT i decided to splash out and buy one. I'm doubled glad i did, just seen my DS noise margin drop from a constant high 20's down to a meagre 10, UP is still sitting pretty at 6. Maybe worth an investment?

I had the same as well, Had the profile reset, went down to SNR of 6dB, connected at 7150, but with 3 days, it had gone back to 22-23 and profile of 2500.

Been told if it is a fault with my system a charge of £160. Happened with the 24mn WBC upgrade.

Upgrade, 1/3 of the speed I got 3 years ago is a great upgrade.

It is becoming clear to me that BT have deliberately configured the DLM to screw up the SNR to the max at the slightest excuse -- Far more than can ever be required to maintain good stability. The only logical explanation is that they do this to cut down their total throughput. Scandalous.

For the moment, I am scared to cough in the vicinity of my router.

I had 2 disconnects in one night (2am and 6am). Both lost sync and then reconnected, but that was enough for BT to put my Target Margin up.

How long did it take to come down again, if it ever did?

It's ridiculous, I know people on other networks who switch off their routers at night or when they go out. If we did this BT would have us on something worse than dial-up.

Its only been 7 days since then and nothing so far. Last time it was around 2 week

I was under the impression that it took around 10 loss of sync events in an hour before the margin was increased. Clearly not

Although I've switched to LLU, when I was on Enta I always turned the PC off at night and on and off during the day and it never altered my sync, speeds were always the same.

It wont if you're using a router as its always on

When I said switch off pc that was the router as well at night

Just bought the Netgear DM111 - Don't need the wireless. It's not my equipment I am 99% sure.

Guess it's time to get BT out.

I have been waiting weeks for my SNR to improve but it won't - got no idea why it went from being good to rubbish and I'm too idle to kick up a fuss.

:D :D :D

That made me guffaw!

This is what I am faced with, 2wire 2700HGV (BT business) router:

You should see the SNR fluctuation on my new line, 23dB max - 2.8dB min ... several times a day.
Even the upstream margin is fluctuating -
28dB and I get 8128kbit/s, 24dB and i get less than 6200kbit/s (often a lot less)

Hence the current poor state of my stats:

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/5660/newlinestats.jpg

Of course BTW have 'made some changes to the line to fix the problem' and have requested that I wait 3 working days to see if the problems have been resolved.

However most BT fault reports are closed automatically if there has been no follow up within 5 actual days.

Looks like i'll be opening a new fault report on Tuesday

:edit:

And check the new stats

A 28.4dB DS noise margin!?

I don't think I like the changes BT have made to my line!

A 24dB noise margin is GOOD news. If you disconnect and resync you'll get a huge boost in sync speed.

I have a netgear DG834Gv5 but my margin is only measured in 0.5db increments. So i would either get 11db or 11.5db. Is that just down to each specific router?

I would say so - i had a netgear DG834Gv3 and it only measured whole number, no points!

A 24dB noise margin is GOOD news. If you disconnect and resync you'll get a huge boost in sync speed.

Unfortunately that is the upstream margin, and my US sync is already at the maximum for my package - although whenever my US margin has been at 28dB I have had full DS sync, but I'm thinking that is just a coincidence.

The DS margin was the one I was more concerned with as it was fluctuating wildly during the last few days (2.8-28.4dB), It has now settled at a much better 15 dB (+/-0.1 dB) but there has been no increase in DS sync despite a re-connection late at night and early in the morning.

Here, for comparison, are some previous stats when I did have full sync.
Although the SNR margins and DS sync were up and down a fair bit.
