View Full Version : What can cause an increase in SNR?

I noticed this week my ADSL2+ connection is syncing at 7 meg now instead of the 13 meg I used to get last time I checked, and BT's speed test confirms it's set to this low level.

I looked on my router and my SNR has doubled from 10.0 to 22.0.

Loop Att is the same as it used to be at 12.0.

Before I begin the nightmare of trying to fix this, can anyone suggest the most likely cause for this change? I live very close to my exchange (a few streets away) and my home is in a 2 year old flat. I've made no changes to my telecoms setup at all. Everything is the same.

Any suggestions? I don't mind so much the 7 meg connection.. I never downloaded at the full 13 meg anyway, but I'd still like to get to the bottom of why it's changed.

Thanks!

BT's DLM is so flaky, just rebooting your router can cause an increase in the target SNR margin.

Flaky is an understatement. I was already on 15 dBs margin, for no reason... my line is good, quite capable of 16 Mb/s when BT leave it alone. This morning BT pulled the connection and put it back with a capped profile at 9727 kb/s. A capped profile means that no matter what the SNR it will not connect any faster.

Something has to be done about this appalling situation. We should not have to sneak around quietly every time we pass the router, scared that BT will lower our target SNR if we cough, or if a fish passes wind somewhere in the Atlantic.

Well my SNR has just increased after 1 disconnect in 5 days!

I can't help thinking that all this is just an excuse to cut down the bandwidth through the inadequate backhauls etc.

I woudn't mind so much if the timescales worked the same in both directions, same with BRAS profiles. If you had to have a consistently rotten line for the same time that you must have a good one before it auto-adjusted, then we would stand a chance.

AAaararaghghg!

My IP Profile is now 6000, but My Account still says 6500
