I知 after info on setting up a website.
As far as I am aware I need to do the following things:
1. Design website.
2. Reserve a domain name
3. Find a hosting company
4. get the website up onto the net and in search engines.

Can anyone tell me how much I would have to pay for a domain name and would it be cheaper if I wanted it for say 30 years?

Can anyone recommend a good inexpensive web hosting company that can be relied upon?

What is the best program to upload my website?

If I need to do something else then please let me know, I知 new to all this. I realise I can make a simple website in Word but of course if you know an easy to use website design package then I知 all ears.

Content for my site will be text, a few pictures and maybe a guest book.
I would like the option to add audio and video at a later date too.

If you are a member of ADSL24, you have a free website with them.

You need to put a ticket in, asking for help on the procedures you have to take to use that Website.

Most of what you mention above is pretty acurate. However if you use the free one, you don't have to find a hosting company.

Word can be used, if you have nothing else to design it in. I once created a simple website with links to many pages with Word, but now I use Microsoft Expression Expression Web 2.

Are you in the UK? If so you can take advantage of http://www.software4students.co.uk/ providing you have a child going to school or University or maybe you are at University
Very cheap and excellent. I bought Office Enterprise 2007 for 」35 and Microsoft Expression 2 Studio for 」55.95 (which includes Web 2).

You need an application to upload the website. That is in Web2.

However, there are many people here that can probably link you to decent software that is free

Hope that helps a little

Not in the same mould as the high end stuff, but I started off with Dreamweaver et.al and found that this wysiwyg does it all including ftp client.
Not free but ... http://www.wysiwygwebbuilder.com/

It also has a VGood forum;)

For your web hosting you can do a lot worse than Heart Internet (http://www.heartinternet.co.uk).

Domain names cost around this much (http://www.heartinternet.co.uk/domain-names/domain-search.html?domain=skint4sure.com&x=0&y=0) but I don't know if you can do a 30 year deal though! 8)

There are several free ftp apps around such as Filezilla (http://filezilla-project.org/) for example.

Dreamweaver does it for me for web development but, some people think it is too complicated...
It also handles audio and video...

There a few free web building (http://www.personalwebkit.com/) apps too.

Good luck with your website. :)

I've been using LiquidSix (http://www.liquidsix.com/) to host for the past 2 years or so. Been first class and have given excellent support on the couple of occasions I've needed it. :D:D:D:D:D:D

It might be worth checking out some free templates around the 'net as well, which could save you a lot of time if you only need something fairly simple. This site (http://www.freewebsitetemplates.com/) has quite a lot of nice templates.

As the above links/recommendations show, hosting & domains don't cost all that much either.

Unless you really love coding by hand/have a really specialised requirement/enjoy the thrill of unknotting your Web design some time in the future and wondering to yourself 'why the hell did I do it that way?', I'd also suggest having a look at a Content Management System (CMS) that lets you 'plug in' your requirements using a framework of code already setup to be a Web site. Go have a look at Joomla, for example.

I got a year's platinum hosting package with dreamhosts.com for $10 - they were running a special for their tenth anniversary. One click install of Joomla, Wordpress, Gallery etc.

No idea what I am going to do with the domain or the webspace - bought it drunk

I have had very good experiences with pmwiki which, despite its name, can be set up so that its wiki characteristics are not implemented and not apparent. If these wiki characteristics are removed from display and password protected, it leads to a straightforward website that can be amended quite easily with no difficult coding required.

See http://www.pmwiki.org for more details, including numerous examples of skins, basic layout designs, etc.
