Newsgroup access is available for text-based access. What are you looking to do with the newsgroup access? :)

The server name is news.enta.net

Text-based newsgroups are just like discussion forums...

I have no idea about newsgroups and how to work them, although i do know that some services provide TV progs, films etc which are available to download. I take it those kinds of services are not provided to us?

No, the Enta news service is text only. You'll either need to subscribe to a news server, or find a free one that takes binaries (& accept the poor speeds provided). A decent news server costs about $15/month.

Newsgroups are the hidden gem of the Web. You can download films, dvds etc and all for FREE:D If you want these, you must have a good News Server. Giganews is the gold standard but I use Newshosting which is less expensive - they have all the groups you need (and tens of thousands you won't); a good retention rate i.e. the number of days files are retained on the server and are reasonably reliable (no News Server is ever perfect). Watch out, though - there are lots of traps for the unwary - illegal files; spam and nasties like hidden viruses and trojans:eek: . These can be avoided but you need to know what you're doing. There's also quite a steep learning curve. The delights of rars, pars and nzb files await you.
You also need a good newsreader. IMHO you can't beat NewsRover. It has lots of functions, including unattended downloads - you can set it to download in the early hours so making the most of our generous off-peak allowance and there is a superb help function which should get you started.
There are other good programs out there but my advice is to avoid "free" news servers like the plague.
You will also need a decent media player. Windows provides one and it's not as bad a Microsoft haters say, but there are much better ones available for free or for very little.

Bear in mind that you still need to abide by the ISP's terms and conditions whatever service you use to download :)

lol I wondered when that'd be mentioned - all this talk of illegal downloading

Personally I use Maximum Usenet, which allows me unlimited download bandwidth (basically my ADSL24 account bandwidth of 345 gigabytes is my monthly limit!) and matches the 8 meg download speeds no probs so it's very, very quick.

They take paypal which is why I chose them, had no probs so far (over a year with them now). I find binary newsgroups very handy for downloading free of charge non-copyrighted gnu/linux distros :o :D

If someone was to point me in the direction of an extremely simple newsgroup tutorial, i would be grateful. To be honest i have always sort of sniggered at newsgroup users paying to fileshare. With torrents you are still sticking it to "The Man" and i only use them cos i don't bloody know how to use newsgroups:D

Ok, heres a silly question, on the names of the groups on the news server what does some of the slang at the start of the name stand for such as in these names:

alt.comp.windows
cn.bbs.comp
bib.comp.windows

Obviously comp is computer but what are the others?

Cheers again,
Riley.

I use newsdemon for a news provider but there are lots available
Newsrover, news reader software is a free download when you subscribe
and works well with nzb files.
