I live slap bang in the middle of Cumbria and the recent bad weather caused the box on the telegraph pole outside to become dislodged. This resulted in my noise margin plummeting into the negative and my router losing connection. The router then resynced at 160kbps.
A BT engineer came around and fixed the box yesterday morning. You'd think I'd be happy, but it has left me with other problems.
Firstly, my IP profile is still at 130kbps despite the fact that I am connected at over 7000kbps. I was under the impression that large increases such as mine should take place within a couple of hours? I can barely even check my email at these speeds and any sort of web browsing is impossible without disabling all javascript, flash and images. I have already lost a week of service - is it really fair for BT to expect me to wait even longer for their archaic profiling system to catch up?
Secondly, they've raised my target SNR to 15. I understand that you have to keep your router connected continuously for 14 days in order for it to lower, but since this was all caused by a line fault that BT have subsequently fixed, is there any chance that they would make an exception and lower it early?
Thirdly, they've enabled interleaving on my line, but this has not been reflected in my account page, so I have no way of turning it off again. It might not seem like a big deal, but I am an avid gamer and those extra 20ms make all the difference. I've raised a ticket, but the last time I did that, it took them 14 days to reply...
Full marks to BT for identifying and fixing the problem quickly. The engineer seemed like a good guy and he had to stand up a ladder in high winds and heavy rain in order to fix everything.
Zero marks to BT for doing everything they can to conserve bandwidth under the guise of making my line more stable...
