After having enough of my current ISP (yes, it is Tiscali) I have been looking at broaband providers to migrate to and have deemed this the best one.

I just have a couple of questions if you please:

1. What is the difference between the max plan and the fixed plan? of course the speed but what i dont get is, you can have Home 30 on either up to 8mb, or any of the fixed speeds, for the same price, with the same limitations of usage. That just sounds a little weird to me. Also My area can get up to 5.5mbps, so when migrating, surely it would be of more benefit to choose the max plan?

2. When I did the ADSL checker, it said it was available in the area but I am currently on LLU therefore will get a fat bill from BT if I join. Does this only apply if I dont currently have an ISP? or will this fee apply if i migrate?

Many Thanks,
Spencos

1. http://adsl24.co.uk/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=7&id=37&artlang=en might make things clearer.

2. If you don't have an ISP there will be a BT activation fee of the case cost, so it's easier to migrate and have no downtime.

Thanks

James

Just to clarify your last point: Yes, migration from LLU does incur a fee, unfortunately.

Many thanks for the quick replies.

After a read of the link I have just 1 more question, how far from the exchange do you believe should be adequate to support a stable max line? I dont know how far specifically my exchange is but its about a mile, maybe 1 and a half.

Can you post your current modem/router line stats? If you are unsure where to obtain them let us know and we can find out for you. This enables us to give you a much better idea of what speed your line can handle. If the BT checker says you can get above 2Meg - then I would always choose a Max connection (unless you know otherwise)

Not totally sure what they are but googled them and found a page with a tutorial on how to get it from my router.

Not sure which bit you need though, tried to paste the html in but its turned off lol :(

which bit / bits do you need from all the tables?

Attenuation, SNR (or Noise Margin), and Synch (Connection) Speed; up & down for all 3.

Ok here goes hope this is what you need:

Attenuation: Upstream: 15.5 dB Downstream: 29 dB

Noise Margin: Upstream: 27 dB Downstream: 25.5 dB

Not too sure about the last one as it wasnt there, but im guessing that this is it:

Date Rate: Upstream: 256 (Kbps.) Downstream: 2240 (Kbps.)

:)

You are definitely on LLU, but that line is crying out for more speed. You should get the full 7-8 Meg with us on that line.

Hello there, sorry about the highjacking but figured I may as well ask in here seeeing as its relevant.

Anyway, I've been thinking about joining up from Tiscali (the service and deals seem to good to be true! :P) and would also like to know which would be the best connection for me. I'm on 2mb now but obviously a higher speed is nice :D

Could you give us any help from these settings?

Connection Speed Downstream = 2272 kbps Upstream =288 kbps

Line Attenuation Downstream = 44 db Upstream =12.5 db

Noise Margin Downstream = 16 db Upstream =26 db

Cheers!

The line is quite long but i'd estimate a stable 4meg or so with your stats :)

So if I went with the upto 8meg service but for one reason or another found the speeds to be lower than 2meg and didn't like it, could I downgrade to the fixed 2mb one?

Cheers

Yes, but they are the same price apart from the Unlimited 2mb and the unlimited 8mb.
