I am interested in what modem/router everyone uses so I can add the relevant information into our new FAQ site. Just the make and model will be fine - and whether it's a USB modem, or a wired/wireless router etc.

Cheers :)

Just thought.......I've got an Edimax AR6024 wired router too. It worked OK after I got a Jap-English technician to set it up for me. :D
Instructions and Interface are unfathomable to say the least. I was messing around with the settings and it stopped working :o its probably just a plastic brick now :D

James

It basically just means that its an item that has been sent back when a user changed their mind, or one without fancy packaging.

It comes with everything it will have originally had :)

I've got a Speedtouch 330 modem. I'm on a long line to the exchange - about 4.37km (crow fly) and am getting 2mbps (ish) data download speed, which I think is fine (compared to my previous ISP - Orange, it's really a lot better than just fine!!!).

The modem is, though, dropping the connection from time to time, in the evening. Would getting a router be likely to have any effect on that or is it just the inevitable consequence of not living next to the exchange?

Cheers
Andrew

Depends why it's dropping the connection, my 330 was dropping it when the USB bus got choked, albeit very rarely, in that case a router would definitely help.

To be honest, I'd get a router anyway, for £15-20 you don't have to connect every time you turn the PC on, and you're a bit safer with the NAT gubbins.

Yeah, all covered.

Might have a problem with it actually, all the sockets in my house share a circuit (terminology?), there's one fuse in the fuse box which says "13A sockets" anyway. Last night I had 2 0.5 second long powercuts on that circuit only, the first after the router had on for an hour and the 2nd about an hour and 10 minutes after that. The actual fuse in the fure box hadn't tripped, which is weird. I wonder if there is a fault with the AC adaptor?

Think I might be a bit of a rarity; I have a billion bipac 7402r2 at the moment.
Bit of a complex interface, but it's able to handle lots of NAT P2P traffic without falling over. Pulling the stats out into cacti via snmp is nice too.

I'm thinking of replacing it with a billion 7404VGO for the phone-to-VOIP ports. (I use a separate netgear rangemax 240 for my main wifi)

I've been through a few in the past;
fujitsu fdx310 usb adsl was great for years, had it running with my linux box as my router.
Also had a couple of netgear DG834s, a v1 and a DG834Gv2 that ended up with my dad, and a draytek vigor 2600+.

My current backup is a netgear dm111p - basic, but useful in a crisis.

Currently back to using my old Speedtouch 330 after trying out a couple of router\modems that a mate lent me - Belkin F5D7632 & BT Homehub one - not too crazy about either of these..!! Ordered a Speedtouch 546v6 off dsldepot about a week ago but seem to be having communications problems from the site. So far have recieved no confirmation order email - all emails to care@dsldepot.co.uk bounce ['too many hops' error]. Mail also seems to be bouncing from catchall@dsldepot.co.uk - which appears to be the 'main' address. Anyone else getting same problems..?? Tried several times over the past few days and using a mate's email address..!! Getting similar problems in their phone system - just seems to be totally automated whatever time of day you ring - have yet to speak to anyone there yet. Or even if it's possible..??!! :D

Most peculiar..!!

A piece of cr:eek:p called a Linksys WAG54G

First one never worked and this one does after a few
firmware upgrades.

I'd never buy another Linksys router

Their phone support is based in India and is run by people who don't speak English
and who know diddly squat about their products.

Yep thats what I had. Couldn't handle multiple connections when torrenting and would kill the internet connection.

Eventually died through a common capacitor fail problem caused by using it as far as I can tell. :)

Never bothered using the wireless, maybe that was the good bit...

Buy anything...it will be better.

Their email address bounced back at me too when I emailed them about when to expect it.
I got though on 0870 240 1060 where a nice woman aplogised and said she would make sure it was sent out, next day it arrived :)

Thanks for reply Michael. The package finally turned up yesterday afternoon via Parcelforce - I'm still baffled as to why dsldepot's email system doesn't seem to work. I never managed to get through on their phone system - just seemed to be on hold forever...!! Still the modem is fine - have been putting it through it's paces for the past few hours..!!;)

I use a DSL-G604T Wireless ADSL Router, which i purchased via ebay for £28 and that included a wireless dongle (and stand) which i am using for the desktop pc.

After adjusting the DNS cache settings, it runs 24 hours, 7 days a week without needing any reboots and is between two pcs and gives a perfect signal so it was a good buy.

Me?

If you mean mine the Draytek seems fine, 8128 / 448 soon as IL was turned off, its a strange thing mind, I have to make a dial up connection in windows to connect, its supposedly a "True" Ethernet modem, I installed a new protocal called RASPPPOE as the native Windows PPPOE does not allow raising of the MTU above 1480, this one goes to 1492, which I still dont follow because is it not supposed to be 1500? it seems you connect to the modem via PPPOE and then it connects to the ISP via PPPOA.

Don't ask me man, im noob.

"The DrayTek Vigor 100 is an ADSL modem with an Ethernet connection; it is not a router but a true ADSL Ethernet Modem. By providing a PPPoE to PPPoA bridge, the connected device (firewall, router or PC) can log into the Internet (your ISP) directly and have full control over the ADSL connection - that makes the Vigor 100 a unique product. You can connect any device to the Vigor 100 which has a PPPoE client facility, which includes PCs, most Ethernet-WAN routers and the Apple Airport™ but the connection to your ISP is still PPPoA (unlike other modems which only provide PPPoE native bridging), which is the unique feature of this product and makes it compatible with nearly all UK ISPS, where PPPoA is used as standard.

Other ADSL Ethernet 'modems' use workarounds to get a public IP address 'through' to your secondary device/client, requiring non-standard operation and complicated dual-stage setup (modem logs in, router routes) but the Vigor 100 provides the secondary device with a real routed IP connection and the ability to fully manage the connection, making setup easy. In most cases, the Vigor 100 needs no setup or configuration - just plug it in and set up your PC or router. All login/ISP details are entered on the connected client device, not the Vigor 100.

This method also differs from using a regular ADSL router which logs in itself and then uses NAT or multiple public IP addresses to create an onward client connection for your secondary device; that is not IP Address thrifty, or introduces secondary NAT compromises. With the Vigor 100 bridge/modem, you get a true single public IP address (or multiple, if you have them) straight through to your firewall/router, which also has complete control of the ISP connection."

Dont ask me if there are any noticble benefits to this, I dont even know what im looking for.

tboorman
17/07/2007, 13:37
I trust that you've got good firewall software on your PC, as you haven't got the extra security provided by NAT with the Vigor 100.

Some routers are better than others on ADSL Max. The SpeedTouch ones perform particularly well, and my ST 585v6 syncs at a much higher speed than my DrayTek Vigor 2600G did.

I use a D-Link DSL604T and an epic router as backup..

D-Link is a bit noisy other than that no problemo,

Transconant. found this snippet of info about your router...

you can configure your Speedtouch by many ways :
- web gui interface
- CLI command line using Telnet client
- ftp to download/upload to edit user.ini file (cfg file)

For instance, you can set by CLI your MTU with the IP ifconfig command. Use first the menu command to find some help and select the ip interface to configure.
e.g. : :ip ifconfig intf=Internet mtu=yourownvalue (normally 1500 or 1492 for PPPoE)
... or modify the value of mtu by editing the user.ini

Don't forget :saveall command,

Hope it helps a bit :)

Anyway I would highly recommend the above router for any newbies for ease of use and setup etc. It is unbelieveably easy to set up static IP addresses using the router alone you can just logon click on LAN, select the connected client (by Name ie: jonto81-PC) select static IP and the MAC address of that PC will always have that IP address.

Admittedly this can be done easy enough by most but I am thinking more of those like my Dad who are just proud they can turn the computer on

I use a Draytek Vigor 100 PPPoE to PPPoA bridge/modem, this feeds in to a Soekris embedded firewall/router running m0n0wall.

I normally have a Draytek 2600VG at home, but I'm playing around with a unlocked BT 2700HGV + standalone ATA to connect a DECT phone to a VoIP server at the moment - nice features but I powered the 2700 down to move it this morning and it corrupted all its settings! I can't be ar..bothered..to re-set it up right now so the Draytek's back in.

Smartybones: Nice mod! How's the fan powered?

Speedtouch 585 v.6 using 6.1.4.3 firmware. Coverage not up to mimo or N standard, but there again, it is a bog-standard 54g wireless device. Running rock-steady at maximum sync (8128 / 832). Pity I'm still stuck on a 2000 profile these past 14 days!

speedtouch 576 at the moment unfortunately :mad:keeps reseting itself, 7 times in a few hours:mad:

but ive got a NetGear DG834G v3 on its way to help in my quest for a stable connection, heard good things about them holding on to low snr, can anyone on this forum confirm this as i am currently syncd at 6400 with a snrm of 8.5 (it will drop to around 2-4 at night)

Using a Cisco 837 ADSL Router. Yes, it's a bit overkill, but as a Cisco Engineer, it's useful for practicing on!

Currently using my trust dg834g v2, although it has started to cycle the whole reboot process from time to time now. I did buy a DG834N for this connection to adsl24 but that causes severe packet loss and major timeouts, apparantly a few have had that sort of problem with it. Netgear have been useless in their support :(

So currently awaiting to see if i can get it replaced with another N or get a new Gv4

Currently using my trusty dg834g v2, it started rebooting itself a lot last night so i think it may be goosed. I bought a dg834n in preparation for my adsl24 connection but that causes severe packet loss and timeouts, netgear have been all but no use in trying to solve it, telling me to use MTU's of silly figures. I am waiting to see if the supplier with swap it over for another or supply a dg834g v4 and refund the difference. :(

I have been using a Netgear dg834GT for a little under 2 years, with my main machine on ethernet and a secondary one upstairs on wireless with a Netgear 108mb USB adapter. The signal coverage is excellent, having to go from one end of the house to the other, starting in a single storey extension, going through a cavity brick wall and then two solid brick internal walls! By careful placement of the adapter I get 80% signal strength. It's also been stable, holding onto 8128 at even under 6db SNM (normally 9db during the day).

It recently died however. I bought another, not realising how quickly Netgear would honour the 2 year guarantee! Now I have 2 of them.

The only problem I have with Netgear is their Indian call centre.

Smartybones: Nice mod! How's the fan powered?

its powered from a external 12V supply.... i wouldn't risk powering it internally... the WAG54GS is underpowered as it is....

Dynamode R-ADSL-C4W-EG ADSL 125Mbps Wireless Router

£29.99 from Broadbandbuyer.co.uk

Perhaps not the most techincal and configurable machine around but a nice one.
DHCP works a treat as we have a Draytek 2600i at work and I can run my VPN to it with no hassle at all.

I have a Belkin Wireless router with ADSL modem (F5D7630) which is currently in use
and
a Speetouch 780WL router / modem with VOIP being setup.

I also have an older efficient 5861 router which I repaired after the power supply died from excessive heat- that router was part of my room heater - it ran too hot to touch)

In the moment I am a bit struggling with the VOIP settings for the router .
In the setup I am asked
about the SIP URI : what do I enter ?
the registrar IP : what do I need here (in 0.0.0.0 format)
and the proxy IP (in 0.0.0.0 format)

If I use the setup wizard and tell it to enable VOIP it asks me for something sligtly different:

it asks for the registrar adress (in format bla.bla.com)
and the proxy DNS which I know to be proxy.entacall.com

Anybody out there who can help with this ?

Thanks
Robert

BTW.: I am a new user on ADSL24 having deserted from PIPEX after they became a total desaster zone. I've been with pipex for 5 years without problems until late last year in the summer when everything started to go wrong, I lost connection once a month and it always took an engineer from BT to get the PIPEX equipment running again after 4-5 days (I've been on a LLU exchange where Pipex/Tiscali had their own equipment)
When it happened again after New Year , their technical service has deteriorated so much that it took over 1 hour holding on th ephone to report the errror ( they never reacted to my e-mails sent to them telling them the line is down) .
And since 1st Feb they have changed to an 0870 number at 10p/min
That was the final straw!
So, here I am, and I am happy buny with a working and fast connection

I am looking forward to a fruitful exchange
