View Full Version : ADSL downloads at dialup speed (30-40kb/s)
Hope you can help me. I am an ADSL24 customer and I am having serious speed loss on my downloads, in fact all my ADSL activity this evening.
I saw I was getting speeds on download of 30kb/s, and so I did a speedtest at speedtest.net.
See http://www.speedtest.net/result/124434399.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
528 kbps download and 338 kbps upload?
This is really poor and only about the same performance as I used to get on BT Yahoo dialup. Can you suggest what might be causing this?
When I initially moved to ADSL24 I got 4970kbps download. So what could have changed and why?
I ran a test at speedtester.bt.com and got a message saying that my IP address does not match the one that BT have (or something). When I try the speedtest again the service is now busy.
Could this be because I have not yet cancelled my BT dialup subscription (so they think I am still a dialup customer) and/or the exchange is not recognising my IP address?
Thanks.

No
Looking at your Max reports will show you have had an extremely low sync yesterday at 13:36. This unfortunately has dropped you to a 0.5 meg profile. Did you have any power surges or mini disasters at that time yesterday? Have you optimised your internal wiring as per http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php.
Reboot your router and see if the sync speed increases. If so then hold this sync for 3 days and the speed will start to go up.
Please note that this is BTs profiling system that is restricting your line and not ADSL24.
If you're struggling getting your router stats post he make and model and we'll help out
It's possible you had a low synch event in the past 3 days which has dropped your profile. Try the BT Speed Test (http://speedtester.bt.com/) to see what your IP profile is currently.
Ircsum.
edit: Dang! Paul is just too fast on the draw. ;)
The BT speedtester may have a problem as it does occasionally report that message. Whe nyou say dialup speeds, 30-40k is actually around 400 kbps, whereas dialup is under 56kbps, so its still much faster than that, but albeit, nothing like you used to get.
This is usually down to a profile issue as Paul suggests. Keep trying the BT Speedtest and as soon as you get a results post it here so we can help :)
*update* This is a line problem not anything to do with the ADSL24 network :)
Looking at your Max reports...
BT IPStream Max - 8128 01/05/2007
BT IPStream Max - 6816 02/05/2007
BT IPStream Max - 5120 02/05/2007
BT IPStream Max 7392 05/05/2007
BT IPStream Max 8128 08/05/2007
BT IPStream Max - 576 09/05/2007
Your line has dropped connection to the exchange and reconnected at 576k - this is why your profile has dropped to 512k and hence the speeds you are seeing. As your ADSL sync speeds are varying from 576 all the way to 8128 - it almost certainly suggests there is a problem with either:
a) a filter has gone dodgy, or you need to check you have the best possible setup - http://adsl24.co.uk/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=5&id=48&artlang=en (it can make a big difference)
b) there is an external problem on the line or somrthing in the area causing interference and making the line drop that low temporarily.
Again, we need to find the root cause of your dropouts as even though your speed will rise back to normal within 3 days, this is likely to happen again until you get your setup sorted :)
James
Thanks for your help. I think I know what has caused this. At 1336 yesterday I plugged in my work laptop to an extension socket in the bedroom to work through a VPN connection and instead of using the ADSL socket on the filter, I think I accidentally plugged into the phone socket on the filter. Doh!
This will probably explain the reason for my profile dropping. So how do I get my profile back to an 8meg one? Do I need to leave my PC on for 3 days?
I have my router still configured the same as it was, and connected to the main phone cocket in the house, and have my desktop PC connected to it, where it was for the first few days.
I have never checked and configured the sockets like the guide shows. But when I get a chance I will do. Is this vital?
Thanks James, Paul and Ircsum.
I've already posted a reply but forum said it would be checked by an administrator first?
I think I know why this has happened. I accidentally plugged in a work laptop at 13:36 yesterday through a filter on a 2nd line in the bedroom, but plugged it into the phone socket on the filter instead of the ADSL socket. Doh!
This will explain why the exchange has dropped my profile. I connected through a VPN connection on the laptop, and come to think of it a dialup box did pop up part way through. I also lost my connection part way through working when I went for a cuppa.
So it's my fault.
My router is Linksys AG241 and James helped me set it up on the phone on the 1st May. He rang me and was v helpful. The settings should still be the same as I haven't changed them.
When you say I have to wait 3 days for the profile to get back to 8 meg, do you just mean it will in it's own time, or do I just need to leave the router on solidly for 3 days (and not the PC)?
NB. BT speedtester is still not responding.
Oh yes - and I still need to set up the phone sockets in the 2 rooms as the ADSL guide link shows.
You'll need to reboot the router at some stage (around the 3 day mark) for it to synch at the higher speed, otherwise your synch will stay just where it is at present. At least you know it's not a major line problem, which is good news. :)
Ircsum.
Ok will reboot it on Sun, and over the next 3 days will put a big KEEP OUT sign on the other room so I don't do that again. Not planning to work at home anyway!
What a numpty I am!
Will post here with the outcome and BT speedtest stats on Sunday to check everything has returned.
:D
reboot it now, not after 3 days otherwise if the router is still on 576 sync now why wait?
Doh! Apologies for the daft advice.....I can only suggest brain failure on my part. :(
You need to have the higher synch for 3 days before the profile catches up.....
Ircsum.
When you say reboot, do you just mean turn off and on (not reset to factory settings and set it up again)? I have done that, the ADSL light is on solid, and the internet light is flashing sometimes.
I intend to leave it on now until Sunday to catch up at the higher sync rate. Is that right?
How can I check what sync rate the Linksys AG241 router is on at the moment?
Yes, off/on...but, if your router web interface has a disconnect/reconnect button, it's better to use that. Just make sure you have a decent synch at present & wait for your profile to catch up with it.
Ircsum.
edit: not familiar with that router; someone who is will have to tell you.
OK, fingers crossed that James (Admin) will reply then, as he seemed pretty familiar with the AG241 router when he helped me set it up. :)
If you run a BT speedtest (if it works now?) it will tell you the SYNC speed, but otherwise, on your router, login to the interface at http://192.168.1.1 - go to Status at the top right, then on the menu underneath click on DSL Connection.
James
This what the DSL status screen shows on the router:

The BT Speedtest is still not working. I get the following message:
The IP address discovered on the network associated with your telephone number:xxxxxxxxxx, did not match the one we have logged from this browser/connection. Please check your telephone number and try again. If problem persists please contact your CP.
Those router line stats are spot on now - great line.
James
Just to confirm, my profile is back to 8128 and 448 now so I'm v chuffed. And it only took 2 days to reprofile. Nice one.
:p :)

Suppose I'll just keep watching and see if I get better speed over the next few days.
