Hi James, I just did a tracert to www.yahoo.com and there seems to be a problem connecting to/from at hop 4 as shown:

Tracing route to www.yahoo-ht3.akadns.net [69.147.114.210]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 2 ms 1 ms 1 ms home.gateway [192.168.1.254]
2 22 ms 21 ms 20 ms ironwood.dsl.enta.net [87.127.229.6]
3 21 ms 20 ms 20 ms vlan4002.telehouse-east.dsl.enta.net [87.127.229

4 185 ms 212 ms 109 ms te5-2.telehouse-east.core.enta.net [62.249.192.1

11 95 ms 104 ms 94 ms ge-2-1-0-p140.msr1.re1.yahoo.com [216.115.108.17
]
12 95 ms 95 ms 95 ms ge-1-30.bas-a2.re3.yahoo.com [66.196.112.37]
13 96 ms 95 ms 93 ms f1.www.vip.re3.yahoo.com [69.147.114.210]

Trace complete.

This could be a cause of *some* slow speeds and also not reaching 90%

Thanks

I get exactly the same results using 2 non ADSL24 lines so it appears that router is simply not responding to route traces. Sorry but that's not the cause.

A request timing out is not in itself significant. Cisco routers often have better things to do than respond to pings. ;)

I did a straight ping to yahoo.com & my numbers are similar to yours:

Pinging www.yahoo-ht3.akadns.net [69.147.114.210] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 69.147.114.210: bytes=32 time=85ms TTL=50
Reply from 69.147.114.210: bytes=32 time=85ms TTL=50
Reply from 69.147.114.210: bytes=32 time=86ms TTL=50
Reply from 69.147.114.210: bytes=32 time=86ms TTL=50

Ping statistics for 69.147.114.210:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 85ms, Maximum = 86ms, Average = 85ms

Ircsum.

edit: Wah! he did it again! :(

Yeah, it makes no difference if one router times out as long as it gets to the final hop :)

See how it goes...

Ok folks, I just thought I would mention it, as it was mentioned to me on another forum that that *may* be a cause

Actually, I was referring to hop 4 not hop 6 where it timed out.

4 185 ms 212 ms 109 ms te5-2.telehouse-east.core.enta.net [62.249.192.1

Wouldn't that make any difference even when the other hops where considerably less latencey times?
Thanks

That just means pings have a lower priority than other traffic on that server as the next hop averages 23ms and the final hop 93ms

James

Not really as long as the final hops reply in a timely manner :)

Ok James, thanks for clarification.

Just on a speed point I have been reading the FAQ on here and my router dooesn't show my connection speed. It shows most other other things like system up time , time and date, and IP but no connection speed. The BT speed test showed my max speed/profile as approx 8mb/sec so my maximum speed should in theory be about 7mb/sec, but it only aroun 6mb/sec. I was just trying to get up to 7mb/sec again where it was when I first joined adsl24.

Thanks

Which router is it? It will be there somewhere...

Its a Billion 7202 BiPac router

Go to the Configuration page, then WAN, then ADSL... What does it show?

It should show:

Upstream: Upstream rate
Downstream: Downstream rate

James

AORman

Ok, it says Upstream rate:256 and downstream rate:2048. Eh? somethings not right there because my last speed test says I have a download speed of 5mb/sec!!!

James
14/05/2007, 22:46
256 and 2048? Yeah, must be complete tosh that...

AORman
15/05/2007, 19:43
Now it says : Upstream 448, downstream 8128.
So as most internet gurus reckon on getting 90% of the ISP's download speed and according to the FAQ I should get 7mb/sec (at times)

James
15/05/2007, 22:13
Yes. As long as your BT profile is set accordingly...

Ok, just manged to do a speet test on BT site, Results as follows:

Results Image not loaded

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5332 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

So my BT profile seems to be correct, but just can't get back to 7mb/sec I got when I first joined adsl24.

Speeds will always vary - 7.38pm will be busy as a lot of people go online after tea. At least the profile is good :D

Yea, thats certainly true. I do note that my speed does vary according to the time of day etc.
mmm, wonder why the moon does not affect it :)
