View Full Version : Poor Connection Rates through Wireless

Hi, I have just been migrated from AOL (Yeah, I know, another sap :) )

However, I'm more than a little frustrated. The reason I left AOL was because of the recent poor download rates I was receiving. When I was first put onto AOL's 8Mb Max service I was getting a connection of 7012 to my exchange and getting download rates of round 6.1Mb which I found acceptable. Of late however, I am now getting around 2Mb

Time for a change so I saw the shining light of adsl24.

This has not been the complete answer I have been looking for. My first opinions of ADSL24 are great, I love the setup here and it seems to have a very close knit community of people that look after one another.

So, can you help me?

My Router is a Netgear DG834 V2 and my wireless card is a Netgear WG3111 V2

After looking through many guides both on the forums here and online I cannot seem to get any better connection other than around 2000kb through my wireless connection.

Here is what I have tried so far:

Used the command prompt to find my optimum MTU then subsequently changed it as AOL make you set it to 1400 (Why do they have to be different eh???

Changed my wireless channel to channel 11 incase of interference.

Updated the firmware on my Router

Brought a laptop back from work to test. Using a Cat5 connection I obtained speeds of 6500Kb (Again acceptable) but when using the same laptop wirelessly I went back to around 2000Kb????

I then used TCP optimiser which did help slightly and brought the wireless up to around 2350kb

Please can someone shed some light on this issue? I'd hate to think that the rude man from AOL disconnections was right in saying they weren't throttling me after all (HA HA yeah right)

I have just tried the laptop again. It must have been a fluke earlier as I am now only getting speeds of about 1500 to 1800kbs on cat5 or wireless????

Reset router to factory defaults and re-set up all connection parameters etc etc but still to no avail

Any suggestions?????

Sorry for bleating on about this but thought more info the better!!

Just tried a speedtest this morning after making no changes to the config at all and manged to get the speeds shown in my attached file???

There has got to be something interfering with my line I thought so tried changing the filter on my line but still no different although at the moment I am still maintaining my new 3.5Mb speed????

I know I am still in my 10 day period but at the speeds I am syncing with my exchange I was expecting better?

Thanks,

Col

Hi Collin,

I see that you were migrated on the 9th May. What is your router synced at? It is normal for your connection speeds to fluctuate while your best Stable Line Rate is found. Your wireless connection effects the speed between your PC/Laptop and the router. Not your broadband speed. Wireless can be unstable even when you are right next to your router.

Can you do a BT speed test and post the results here? http://speedtester.bt.com/

If your router is synced at an appropriate speed for your line stats, then it is best to leave your router on rather than fiddle to give your BT profile time to adjust properly.:)

I'll not get a chance to test that till later on but I have used the BT speedtester site quite often.

From memory I am syncing with exchange at 8024Kb, when conducting the BT tests it says its testing at 7102Kb

Previous tests have given me results of around 6300Kb which made me initially think it's an issue with my setup although last night when I checked I only got 1210KB!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Not checked today yet)

I'll test it again tonight if it's not busy, just thought I'd reply just now to give you more of an insight.

The thing that's annoying me most is I'm an IT tech so should know better?? Frustrating to say the least, I must be missing something simple???

Thanks for the speedy reply, I look forward to any more suggestions :-)

Things certainly have improved today. Perhaps I'm jumping the gun a bit. Just scared after my dealings with AOL.

I've posted my speeds tonight along with my line stats.

I'll leave this till my 10 day stabilisation period then see what my final stable rate is.

Thanks for the speedy response though, glad to be part of what seems to be a godsend of an ISP.

Just wanted to make a last post to say things have settled down after my 10 day settle down phase.

Well pleased with my speeds now as seen in my screenshots.

Thanks again,
