Hello all,
I migrated to an ADSL24 max service yesterday from a fixed 512 connection with another ISP. I'm looking forward to the excellent service and support that everyone seems to report.

I may be a bit previous with my questions but you experienced ADSLMaxers out there will probably be able to put my mind at rest during these early days.......

My question is "I think I have a sync rate of over 7M but I can only download at less than 2M - is this to be expected?"

The background:

I am currently syncing downstream at 7616kbps. (My Safecom router says Downstream Data Rate 7616 so I assume that is the Sync rate referred to in the FAQ explanations.) The Downstream line rate in "My Account" shows as 7392 at 12:29 yesterday, which I assume was the same thing when the line switched to ADSL24.

However, the various speed testers all show download speeds of less than 2M. I would have thought I would have got something much better.

I can't get the BT speed tester (http://speedtester.bt.com/) to work so I can't do the "proper" test.

Out of interest, the router was showing a data rate of 2M when I had the 512 fixed.

Thanks for reading,

ebuygum, thee be welcome 'ere. :)

Your line will undergo a 10-day training period during which time speeds will fluctuate. Your current IP profile is likely to be 2 Mbits, restricting your download speed to a bit less than that. If it doesn't normalise when the 10-day period is up you should put a ticket in for a "stuck profile".

Your current synch of 7616 strongly suggests your line is interleaved. You may wish to have that removed later. The 7392 speed in your account is the profile step you're on (6.5 Mbits). Anything between 7392 & 7967 (like your 7616) will give a profile of 6.5 Mbits.

All in all it looks like a great line; just wait for the dust to settle on the migration & see if the profile & speed pick up.

As Ircsum says :)

Plus, you can check your profile at http://speedtester.bt.com

Ircsum: Yes it is interleaved.

James: I can't get the bt tester to work. I get a message something like "the information for my line is not available, check I've entered the correct number".

The BT tester often gives errors - it tends to be oversubscribed. You just need to keep trying. If you get that error every time it may be your migration is not yet logged on the appropriate BT database. It's certainly not something to be concerned about. I think you can take it as read that your profile is currently 2 Mbits.

Ircsum: I think you are probably right about the database (it's less than 24hs since I migrated) and I guess you are right about the 2M profile.

If the profile doesn't change should I wait the full 10 days before I report a stuck profile? (I guess I'm jumping the gun here.)

AFAIK it's supposed to normalise after 3 days so you'd have to wait that long at least. I was under the impression that BT would do nothing about it until the full 10 days had passed but I've seen here in other posts that it's been logged as a fault before the end of the 10-day period. It's certainly too soon to raise a ticket at present.

I'll shut up for a while and sit back and wait!

Thanks

Good plan! :D

I give BT 3 days after migration for the profile to raise and if it's still at 2000 kbps - customers can then report stuck profiles :)

I said I'd wait but I can't keep away - I thought I'd let you know that I eventually got the BT speed tester to work and, as suspected:

IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1835 kbps

No problem - this has now been logged with BT.

Oh thanks - I was going to run it again tomorrow afternoon.

Are you ever not there?

I was not here about 2 hours ago, but now I'm here again. Sorry to hound you ;)

I just thought I'd give an update: My 10 days is up and yesterday evening I received an email from James to say that BT had responded to the stuck profile issue.

Sure enough my profile is now 6500 which I believe is the maximum for interleaved. My download sync is 7616.

Thanks James.

I guess the next question from an ADSL Max newbie is "why interleaved?", although this is more out of interest than any big issue.

"My Account" showns interleaving as "auto" so I guess BT has decided to switch it on, or probably more likely not switch it off.

My router currently shows SNR margin varying between 8 and 12dB over a period of 30 seconds or so. (The router reloads the page every 2 seconds ish.) If I recall correctly, a few days ago this went as low as 6.xdB during a similar test so I might be answering my own question.

Is it "normal" to see a variable SNR margin like this? I can't say I've ever seen it during my 512 fixed period but I've probably never looked.

The upload SNR margin is rock solid at 29dB.

Edit: No CRC errors since my router was rebooted at 7:00am and the SNR margin at this first sync was 15.2dB.

Yes - the SNR will vary at different times of the day and will usually be lower at night due to increased noise on the line. As more sync speed comes in, the SNR drops.

Interleaving tends to be enabled by BT on most lines to solve stability issues before they start. But on lines that get 7616 SYNC anyway, Interleaving isn't normally required. Turning Interleaving off will also rise the SYNC rate to 8128.

I think you should try fast mode. We can always reverse the interleaving status if you have problems.

James: OK, please can I try fast mode? Do I need to drop you an email or will this suffice?

Edit: 22/5/2007 8:45. Looking at the SNR margin this morning it's hovering in the mid 6.x dB and I've seen it dip below 6dB. I'm wondering if that means we should leave things alone, at least for now. What's the criteria where "auto" would automatically turn interleaving off?

Cheers
