I've just received my MAC code from Pipex. Before I transfer in to the 8mb service I'd like to know what to expect.

My connection is currently 1mb and I know that there will be a training period. I'm going on holiday in 4 weeks and was hoping to use this as the beginning of this period. This may be a stupid question but does my router need to be connected for this to work?

How long does the migration take following sign up and will I experience any period where I am between providers?

Hi :)

If it's currently at 1Mb with AOL, it should be higher with us on the 8Mb service. Can you post any line stats from your modem/router (such as attenuation and SNR noise margin) so we can estimate at what your line will support?

The training period starts from the first time you connect with us (usually on the day of migration). To be honest the trainign period should not cause any problems for most lines. You should use the Internet as normal during this 10 day period - you don't have to do anything differently :)

Ideally it's best to leave the router on all the time, but if you must turn it off overnight it's ok.

The migration takes 5-7 days from when you place your order and setup billing etc :) You receive confirmation of the go-live date via e-mail once we have a firm date from BT.

My router is a Belkin - I'm afraid I don't know how to obtain the stats you are referring to. When I used a speedtouch modem I used to use some sofware that they supplied.

I too use a Belkin so here is how to get your stats. If this doesn't work for you, it might be the model you are using so post your model number.

Go to the command prompt - Start > Run > Type CMD then hit OK.

Then type telnet 192.168.2.1 (this should work provided you haven't manually changed your router's Ip address)

Then log in with username admin and whatever you set the password to.

When logged in, type: port a1 show

It should now list loads of stats. You are looking for the lines named Downstream Attenuation and Noise Downstream Noise Margin.

These are the ones to post back here!:D

thanks Mark tried that but it didn't work error message could not open connection to the host on port 23: connect failed.

My router model is FSD7630UK4A (a couple of years old)

thanks worked a treat.

Downstream attenuation is 48 dB

Noise margin is 18.5 dB

With a downstream noise margin of 18.5, on 1Mb already, i'd estimate around 3 or so Meg :) is a possibility...

The line is quite long though at 48dB attenuation.

BT say that my line is capable of 5.5meg but I'd be delighted with 3meg.

Although I gave my notice to Pipex on Thursday and got my MAC code yesterday will they have started counting the 30day notice already or does this start after I give my MAC code to you?

mrgarnett, I was with Pipex for a few years and moving to here was the best thing I ever did. Soon as you get your MAC from Pipex the 30 day countdown starts, soon as your on ADSL24 your Pipex commitment is ended (you can still get your Pipex email though) Mine took 10 days to get onto ADSL24 from signing up.

Yeps, once you have your MAC you don't have to wait 30 days before signing up - you can do is ASAP :)

I'll be signing up sometime this week but in view of your prediction for my speed would I be better off going for the fixed service?

When I first went to 1mb I had a nightmare for about 6weeks where I experienced loads of disconnects though this eventually turned out to be due to external interference on the line. I eventually sorted this by fitting a new ADSL faceplate and installing a wireless router.

While I am aware of the training period I'm just trying to minimise any problems that I may have with the move.

Does the BT checker say you can get 2Mb fixed speed? If not, your only option to get above 1Mb is to go for Max.

I have obtained the following info from Samknows.

According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

Standard ADSL RAG results:
You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

so on the face of it I can go for either fixed or max?

So in my case which is preferrable?

LOL - I know which I'd opt for: Max, for sure. :D

I'd go for Max too.
