View Full Version : Off Peak Speeds
Hey Everyone,
Im just about to migrate to ADSL24 from Eclipse within the next few days and everything I have read about this ISP so far has been absolutely top drawer apart from one KEY item, Off Peak Download Speeds.
I have opted for the £19.99 Home 30 package to begin with and I am quite a hefty downloader. I was really banking on the speed being upto scratch for both Peak & Off Peak as Speed is the key reason I am leaving Eclipse in the first place! lol!
So I was wondering if some of you could assure me one way or another that I still have made the correct choice in joining ADSL24 and it wasnt a mistake.
Cheers!
The only reason people suffer from slow off-peak speeds is because every man and his dog sets off their download manager for bang on 10pm when off-peak starts. If everyone spread it out to download overnight, say after 1am the speeds wil be almost ful whack. But because everyone starts at 10pm, that's why you see people mention it can be slower than normal. In fairness, this is a problem with most ISP's as off-peak allowances are far greater/not monitored as much so everyone uses that :)
Speed on ADSL (regardless) of supplier will never be at 100% as there are so many factors that come into play (as you can imagine). Some people expect top speeds all the time but for £20-30/mont hthis is never going to happen on ADSL. Leased lines are expensive because they are uncontented. ADSL is peanuts because it is contended ;)
But what can be said is that if you are having any major issues we'll do our upmost to help get it sorted :)

To be fair to adsl24 I have just switched from Eclipse and even though during off peak the connection isn't exactly full speed (get about full speed around 2am) at 10pm I find the speeds are still in the 200 - 300k regions which is still vastly better than Eclipse and their horrible traffic management which keeps speeds to 50k at 10pm.
You just have to accept that you are on a contended service, personally I always felt 700k speeds are unnecessary but obviously it is always nice to have lol.
Bear in mind when you are talking about 200-300k, do you mean 300KB/s - which is 2-3Mb not 300 Kbps?

Yeah sorry for the confusion I mean 200k to 300k per sec which is of course 2mbs/3mbs in bandwidth talk. I personally don't think that is anything to complain about though and we are talking about 10pm till around 1ish in the morning so it is to be expected that lots of people are using the service to do a bit of downloading.
Oh and believe me if that is putting you off then it shouldn't the big boys of broadband are even worse, for example Eclipse only give you 50k per second right up till 4/5am. Personally I love ADSL24 and I have only been with you for 2 days. I feel as if I got my broadband back after Eclipse took it from me with their awful speeds.
Thanks for the comments! :)

its true that offpeak speeds can be a bit low but has has been said already they pick up after 1 or 2 am and i would'nt worry in the least about not getting your full 300 gigs worth as you can easily do 80+ gigs over a weekend even with low speeds taken into account and you got to remember that finding an ISP that even allows those levels of amounts of downloads is VERY rare and once you add in the UK support it becomes a no brainer decision

Off peak speeds have always been max for me, but as James said, hit 10pm and the majority of the weekend and I can be rest assured speed will hit the 1.7- 2meg instantly from what was 7-8meg
Bit of a pain as thats when im mostly online

Lol, I'm lucky to get 1Mb+ speeds any time of the week with AOL(Nightmare trying to stream stuff from IGN)
All I can say is roll on Monday:D
Slightly off topic
James I would like interleaved turned of but my activation date is the 21st, Is this something that can be done the same time my line is activated with ADSL 24 or done after activation.
Thanks
It can only be set once you are live as we have to have the relevant details from BT to be able to perform changes to an account - which BT give us on day of activation. It only takes around 24hrs to switch it off after activation :)

Why do some people want interleaving turned off? what does it do
It allows your router to synch 512 kbits higher, as a general rule. More importantly (for gamers) it reduces ping time. There is a possible downside: The line may become less stable and if your line has bags of errors the download speed may actually reduce as packets have to be resent. With a good line it's better to have interleaving off.

You can check your Interleaving status on your My account page, or on your router status :)

Would it be possible to turn mine off James?
On another note im currenty synced at around 4-5mb, if I am correct in saying off peak times is Friday 10m to monday 8am, well I live about 1.5miles from my exchange and the speeds here are acceptable, webpages load up fine. Only problem I am having s my stupid router rebooting every now and again but not to matter as I have ordered a new one :)
Rebooting in what way - losing ADSL connection or completely rebooting as in losing all power and network connections too?
Interleaving turned off - this should take 24hrs or so.

P.S. Is your profile fixed?
