View Full Version : Predicted speeds?

Hey there, my father just today migrated from Tiscali to yourselves quite happily obviously the changeover date is yet to be announced etc. But I would just like to know some of the speeds I could be expecting (kbps).

We've gone for the home 30/300 max package (8mb) so, yea.

Here some spec I've found from my router -
SNR Margin - Downstream 31dB, Upstream 30dB
Line attenuation - Downstream 10dB, Upstream 5dB
Data Rate - Downstream 2272kbps, Upstream 288kbps.

Thanks, looking forward to ADSL24!

8Mb (8128 kbps) easily - VERY good line. Bet you can see the exchange from your dads house!

Thanks for the speedy reply James. That's great news! And yes I think the exchange is literally 20-40 metres away! Can hopefully be expecting some great download speeds then, better than this Tiscali rubbish!

Hey guys. I'm about to sign up to ADSL24, moving from pipex (you can yawn, i know there's at least one a day!), onto the same account as Retribution 30/300 max package.

These are my specs from my router:

Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 24 dB 11 dB
Attenuation 44 dB 41 dB

Obviously not as good as Retribution, but any idea whether I'd be able to reach 8Mbs?

Hey YinHoNg, I've found a useful utility (http://www.dslzoneuk.net/maxspeed.php) and I've done a bit of research for you! I think you may be a little displeased to hear you can only receive 2.5-3.3mbps. Which seems very low... However you could try it out for yourself if you wish to.w

EDIT: That's predicting that you're currently on a 2mb package I believe.

Hi YinHoNg - whats your current speed?

James

YinHoNg

2Mbps.

Firstly, thanks for taking your time out to help mate, happiness and health to you and your family!

I tried out that utility for myself and yeh... seems like 3Mbps is gonna be about right. That's disappointing... but what can I do about it?

Unfortunately, the speed you can get is dictated by your distance from the exchange and the quality of your line. In preperation, you may be able to improve your speed slightly by following this: How to increase your speed (http://adsl24.co.uk/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=5&id=48&artlang=en)

Other than that the only other suggestion is to move into the house next to your exchange:D

Here's the funny thing, I do practically live down the street from the exchange!

I did a bit of research (http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange.php?ecode=EAWYM), and found out where my nearest exchange was, turns out that I actually live less than 1/4 of a mile from the actual exchange.

I created a map to show you guys the distance relation between my house and the exchange: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&om=1&msid=102294721446220534427.0000011294cd7ab28f941&z=17

Surely my house can't be classed as THAT far from an exchange??

Remember that your telephone line almost certainly won't take the shortest route from the exchange to your house.

YinHoNg
20/05/2007, 15:21
I understand your point tboorman, but surely where my house is I should be getting a better connection than 3Mbps?

Btw, i was about to try the help tutorial on boosting my speed, but it turns out that I don't have a standard nte5 telephone socket.

I DID notice however, that when I unscrewed the socket, wires 3, 2 and 5 are connected.... In the tutorial, it says that only wires 2 and 5 should be connected.

Should I take out wire 3?

James
20/05/2007, 15:37
Yes! It can make a big difference.

Make sure you check ALL sockets in the house and remove everything bar 2 + 5 in each one.

Once done, reboot your router and re-post your stats :)

James
20/05/2007, 15:39
By the way, you are on 2Mb already and your stats are:

Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 24 dB 11 dB
Attenuation 44 dB 41 dB

That means, I would say you'll get around 6Mb on your line as it stands now.

You attenuation of 44 means you are more like 3Km from your exchange unfortunately. It must take a long route to the exchange.

YinHoNg

Should spend a little more time trying it out first before askin for help.

YinHoNg

These are my specs from my router:

Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 24 dB 11 dB
Attenuation 44 dB 41 dB

Data Rate
Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Up Stream 288 (Kbps.)
Down Stream 2272 (Kbps.)

Here are my new stats after cutting off wire 3,

Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Up Stream 288 (Kbps.)
Down Stream 2272 (Kbps.)

Operation Data
Noise Margin------------Upstream, 25 dB, Downstream, 23 dB
Attenuation-------------Upstream, 46 dB, Downstream, 43 dB

So the major change has been that the noise margin DOWNSTREAM has increased by 10db....

How does this affect the speeds I can get now?

James
20/05/2007, 16:03
I apologise. From my last post I thought the noise margin downstream was 24, not 11 (read it wrong).

So now, with your downstream Noise Margin 23, I still say around 6Mb - maybe a bit lower for stability. You won't get any better than that as its a 3Km line :) So a BIG improvement just by removing those wires...

James

YinHoNg
20/05/2007, 16:38
Ahhh, that's a shame - you got my hopes up there! But on the bright side tho, you are right; it is a massive improvement.

I'm still bemused as to why my particular line takes the long route. Straight line distance, i'm 239m from my exchange. Walking distance through roads, I'm still less than 1Km from the exchange.

I don't suppose there's a way to shorten the distance? :p

Just read some other threads started similiar to this, about potential speeds, and thought that maybe one of them could be made a sticky to save a bit of time for admin and mods?

tboorman

Does http://adsl24.co.uk/faq/index.php?action=show&cat=5 not cover this?

YinHoNg
21/05/2007, 23:28
Sorry, I actually meant about the predicting of speeds. In particular,

Hey YinHoNg, I've found a useful utility (http://www.dslzoneuk.net/maxspeed.php) and I've done a bit of research for you! I think you may be a little displeased to hear you can only receive 2.5-3.3mbps. Which seems very low... However you could try it out for yourself if you wish to.w

to save mods predicting the speeds all the time based on each person's data.

I'm sure there are a fair number of topics that keep coming up; i can imagine this coming up a lot.

Perhaps James could add a link to the DSL Zone UK calculator to http://adsl24.co.uk/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=7&id=13&artlang=en.

I'll add my query to here, seeing as there's already a thread about it.

Thinking of migrating, however my line is pretty bad, as well as being miles away from the exchange. Most calculators and previous ISPs have put me at 512k download (Yes, on MAX!), but then I got them to have a sneaky word with BT, and they changed their set line rate for me up to 1.5mb... if I move and afte rth 10 days I get set at the low rate of 512k, would you do what was necessary to get it boosted up?

You can give me an estimation to my speeds as well if you want, here's my stats:

SNR Margin - 9dB Down / 10dB Up
Attenuation - 60dB Down / 31dB Up
Current Connection - 1440kb Down / 448kb Up

James
23/05/2007, 08:54
You won't get set at a bad rate with a migration. You are on the Max service so your SYNC speed would remain the same as it is now with any ISP :)

You won't get much faster than that to be honest - the line is just too long...

Might as well chuck my stats in here, as my migration is due 01/06/2007.:)

Downstream Margin: 28 db
Upstream Margin: 24 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 14
Upstream Line Attenuation: 16

James

Yes a 2mb line.
I am also 380m from the exchange (if my line could go in a stright line that is!).

James
27/05/2007, 13:27
Full 8128 sync with that line ;)
