Connectivity solutions company murphx has added BT's new up to 40Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet ( FTTC ) technology to its portfolio of wholesale broadband products. The group supplies many of the markets virtual ISPs (vISPs) with internet connectivity services, so don't be surprised if we see a few more FTTC announcements over the coming months.

Murphx's Commercial Director, Carl Churchill, said:

"We know that there is an urgent demand to deliver faster broadband provision across the UK, and we are proud to be enhancing our wholesale connectivity services in a way that can facilitate business growth for resellers and their customers.

murphx remains totally committed to ensuring that it remains at the cutting edge of technology and enabling its partners to take advantage of the latest developments in the channel ahead of the pack."

The press release spin talks a lot about the business advantages, albeit without mentioning any specifically residential qualities. This could suggest that murphx's initial FTTC packages will be, like a lot of other early FTTC ISP packages, priced too highly for residential consumers.

So any indaction when this will be trickled down to us meagre folk?

Also would be interested in prices. My current ISP has announced FTTC but there prices IMO are way to high for an 'up to 40meg' service.

It's a real shame BT have limited the speed (for whatever reason) to 40meg. Other countries are way ahead of the game. By the time this is rolled out and all the issues sorted everything will have moved on again. Still, it's progress.

Having the slightly faster speeds of up to 40meg then also raises the issue of monthly allowance.

However, I would be interested in what ADSL24 has to offer, the prices, the allowance, and any guranateed throughput. My current ISP is offereing 12meg guaranteed throughput. As I currently get over that I see no benefit unless an ISP can offer me guaranteed over what I get now, which is about 16 meg (though I can't be sure what my actual throughput is as that's subjective I guess).

Upload speeds are also faster on FTTC but what that actually means to the average punter is also subjective.

IMO FTTC will be a cash cow for the ISP's with very little speed improvements for us end users. I'll wait and see before I decide who to go with for FTTC. It's already in my exchange and watching what experience others have first.

I would see a considerable difference myself, I currently only get 1meg and that's with tinkering with the snr. Although I'm still quite a distance from the street cab and BT Infinity website tells me I'll not be able to get it the aaisp (http://aaisp.net.uk/) checker tells me should be able to get 10mbps up 3.5 down. Not outstanding by any means but much better than what I'm getting at the moment.

There is a few providers already offering fibre, I think vivaciti offer the best package at the minute with 45gb peak "unlimited" off peak for 30 quid.

I too would be extremely interested to know when this offering will be made available to adsl24 customers.

BT are at last offering this in my area (Muswell Hill - supposedly one of the first areas to get FTTC but in reality only about half got it originally !). If adsl24/murphx/a.n.other don't offer this soon then I'm off to dine with the devil BT, even though I'll be subject to the BT "Fair Use" policy.

Darkstar, there is others ISPs other than BT supplying FTTC, a few of the usual Entanet heads have it, Vivaciti and Xilo as well as AAISP.

Hi.
Our FTTC packages are provided through Enta, it is a 12 month contract and we supply the router [Zyxel nbg460].
The FTTC packages are equivalent to our office packages and prices are as follows:

Office 45 £30.26
Office 90 £43.18
Office 135 £54.93
Office 180 £66.68

Connection charge depends on the upload, for the 2mb upload it is a £47 activation fee, for the 10mb upload it is a £58.75 activation fee.
All prices including VAT.

Not too shabby methinks.

Thanks for that info - I would hope that I can get something soon through adsl24 but if not, then I'll be off to one of those suppliers you mention (gotta be better than BT !). I called adsl24 yesterday and they said they were hoping to announce something soon, but no specifics, so I'll wait until mid-September then decide.

My line is only 800 odd yards from the exchange and can get an immaculate connection, sadly I live in a backwards town which is currently 20 years behind the rest of the country when it comes to planning ahead for the future.

North Wales seems to be totally ignored when it comes to broadband technology :(. My exchange doesn't even have a date for ADSL2+, never mind Fibre!
