View Full Version : Basic (Very!) Use of Webspace
Hi!
With Plusnet I just use WS_FTP to send my files or folders to the Initial Remote Site Folder of /htdocs at ftp.plus.net. I can then browse to them at http://www.myusername.plus.com/[folder]/filename. I didn't have to set up anything besides putting the above details, which Plusnet gave to me, into WS_FTP. A suitable no-brainer for me!
With ADSL24 will I have to use my brain to use my webspace? Will I have to pay for extras? I don't even know what "hosting" means let alone "registering, authoritative nameserver, dns server, , sub-domain etc"
Brian James said in an earlier post "We pre-setup your hosting account ready but no site or page is shown, thats up to you." but, sadly, that does not mean anything to me!
I can see that there are a lot of tools for the Power-Webmaster but could I ask for a simple: "How To... Start Using Your Webspace" article? Or just a few tips to get me started?
(Apologies if this already exists - I saw the WS_FTP tutorials - and I have failed to find it!)
Pat.

I know what you mean lol. Its one of my weaknesses too.
Yes you will have to use your brain, but one you have grasped it you will have a lot more control and flexibility than you had at Plusnet.
I cannot explain it myself. So I would welcome a "Set up for Dummies" instruction too :D
Good luck and welcome to the Forum ;)

You can do a similar thing with Adsl24. Just use your FTP program to transfer your files and directories to the directory named public_html at yourusername.adsl24.co.uk. You will then be able to browse to them at http://www.yourusername.adsl24.co.uk (you can omit the www if you want to). HTH.
Hi,
We provide the means for you the customer to host your own website. We provide the buttons, bits and bobs and video tutorials for customers to see how things are done.
All you need is some software to manage your website like frontpage for an example, design your site and then via frontpage you can upload it direct to your site. All your files must be placed in the public_html folder or no one will see them, its the same folder as what Plusnet called Initial Remote Site Folder.
If you have designed a site already and need to upload it via FTP, use cuteftp or WS_FTP or what ever, its just to upload all your files to the public_html folder.
I will see if I can get a tutorial or a write up done for the forums.
Regards,
Hi Pat.
I'll try and give you a basic view of the ftp. In you fav ftp client your connection/url details will be ftp.yourmainaccountname.adsl24.co.uk so if it was bloggs yours would be, ftp.bloggs.adsl24.co.uk then your username again would be bloggs and the password should be the same one you use to login into cpanel for instance.
Once you have successfully logged in with your favourite FTP proggy, you should see a list of folders, one of which is www if you go into this folder there are a few folders and files, if you transfer your webpage stuff into here making sure you have an index.html (there are other extensions you can use) i.e these
index.html
index.shtml
index.htm
default.htm
default.html
when you go to your www.yourname.adsl24.co.uk your webpage should appear in all its glory. :D
I have my own domain and I've renamed the file index.html.htm to index.html to act as my index page so you can try it out if you want. have a look at www.mrdata.co.uk
Hope that helps to get you up and running
Regards
Bob aka Pcdoc
Edit: aye that public_html will do the same didn't see that one
Thanks Guys
For some reason I thought that no asdl24 domain name was provided and that I would have to pay for one!
We provide all our customers with a sub domain of our URL, for example www[dot]username.adsl24.co.uk.
We also allow customers who have domains to use their space and bandwidth for there domains instead of our sub-domain we provide.
Regards,
Am I right in thinking this: I already own a domain name (trelower.co.uk) but do not have any hosting (at least I dont think so because I dont pay anyone). So when I join ADSL24 I will get 200mb of web space with a sub-domain name from you but if I want to I can use my own domain name instead? (hope that makes sense to someone cos my head hurts, need to get on the learning curve!!)
Correct p770, if you have a domain Im willing to host it free.
Regards,
Right I can see all the bells and whistles in the C panel but they are not much good to me if I can't determine the correct settings for my FTP client -The settings termonology varies for different programs I find -which adds to the confusion
I am using AceFTP and WebObjects Fusion to attempt to publish. Neither is gaining entry.
Net Objects requires:
ftp host ?
username my username
directory ?
password - I am using the web one provided in my email
AceFTP requires:
Server?
User ID my username
Password I am using the web one provided in my email
Account ?
tried various permutations so far - no doubt it is simple once identified. but I need to eat before I try again.
Password and (Username=User ID) are what YOU chose when you signed up. (Unless you have changed them)
Host_thingy is ftp.username.adsl24.co.uk
Initial Folder/directory is /www

No I didn't choose any of the passwords - my ADSL BB username and password which was allocated to me when I signed up is different to the WEB hosting which has a different password. Both were in the confirmation email.
Please find below your email and hosting account URL, IP address, Username and password details. This hosting is supplied by us Adsl24 free of charge as long as you’re a valued customer of ours.

Well I am trying everything I can I still can't get ftp access to my webspace.
